Another Tuesday Fan

I went to the Freedy Johnston show at the Folk Music Center tonight. I went up to him after the show to tell him how I use his music at work and he seemed pleased hearing that. He also commented that he loved my "Tuesday" shirt.

That's it. I sent a tweet that said the same thing tonight, but I figured I'd put it here as well.

Eels Day

Today I somehow decided that it would be a good idea to listen to everything I have by Eels. It works out to a bit over 10 hours.

Left Right Left RIght

The perfect tempo for walking a dog, or just walking on your own if that's how you prefer to do things. Now I just need to find a way to make it longer than 3:22.

Gone Silent

If you normally listen to Internet radio stations you might find something different today. As a protest of the new rate changes taking effect July 15th many Internet radio stations are going dark today.

VWilco

I was surprised to hear a song from the new Wilco album I've been telling you guys about on a VW commercial the other day. Turns out there will be 6 of them coming out over the summer. So if you happen to catch a VW commercial and are grooving on the tunes, go check out Sky Blue Sky.

The one I saw was the one where the tow truck guy just can't bear to take the car away and pulls it out of the red zone so that he doesn't have to tow it away. "That's The Thanks I Get" is the song that plays. It's not actually on the album, but it's a bonus free download that you can get when you buy the physical disc. Wilco is nice in that they'll continuously put things out for the people that bought the disc using QuickTime. Worth buying it right there in my mind.

Recommendation

Martin Sexton has a new (actually it's been out for a a couple months) album out and I'm pleased to say, go get it.

If you're not sure whether or not to plunk down your hard earned cash for it, listen to it first, then go buy it.

First Impressions

I got Sky Blue Sky today after work and a 5 mile hike. I'm liking it so far. It's much more straightforward than the last two releases. If you pick it up at Rhino they have an extra cd ep you get along with it. I haven't heard that one yet.

They also had a vinyl release that contains a cd version of the album. It's tempting, but I have no way to play vinyl, it would just be for the vinyl collection. And there isn't a whole lot to the vinyl collection right now. But I guess I can always start.

New Release Tomorrow

Wilco's next album comes out tomorrow. Sky Blue Sky.

I haven't heard anything about it. But from their last two releases I'll probably get it no matter what I read. Both of them took some time to "get it" so they've earned my trust.

I'll be getting mine from Rhino Records in Claremont. I'll even be in town tomorrow evening, so I'll try and get it then.

Music To My Ears

Have you ever come in on a familiar song, but because you're in the middle of it the song doesn't seem familiar? And the tune that you're hearing is something new, but likable? And then when you hear what the song really is you're a bit sad because the made up song was better? And that you wish you knew how to write songs so that you could turn that dream music you almost heard into something real?

Me neither.

I know I've recently written about it, but today is the 5 year anniversary since my purchase of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I previously said I got it on release day, it turns out I got it the day after. Sorry about that error.

I was going through my old receipts to find what kind of mattress I bought and I came across my receipt from when I bought my copy at the Borders in Long Beach.

I've been playing it fairly frequently since I rediscovered it a few weeks back. I'll be sure to give it a listen when I finish up with this post. You should do the same.

More Concept-ish Albums

After my Yankee Hotel Foxtrot session last week I've been going through more albums that are good enough to be heard all the way start to finish, or those that work best like that.

I'm skipping the obvious Pink Floyds (Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall) and going to a couple more contemporary choices.
Electro Shock Blues by Eels
OK Computer by Radiohead
The Forgotten Arm by Aimee Mann

And I'm only picking one album per artist. Both Eels and Radiohead could have a few, but the ones I picked were the stand outs in my mind.

Any other suggestions for concept type albums?

Heart And Soul Is An Old Dirty Song?

Posted at 07:56 PM   | | |

YHF

I just finished a top to bottom listening of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I've had the songs in regular rotation, but not in order and all at once in a long time.

It was great before and it's gotten better.

I remember when I picked it up. The Border's in Long Beach on the release day. I heard an NPR story about it on the way down there and I'd heard rumblings about it because of all the troubles they'd gone through to get it released. I decided to pick it up while I was there.

If you don't have it you should get it. It might take you a few listens to "get it" but if you put the time and effort (yes music listening takes effort) into it you'll be sad that you went nearly 5 years having not heard it before.

Read some reviews, and then go pick up your copy. I'd recommend a physical copy so you can get the lyrics too.

I've got to go sit in silence for a while now.

First Thoughts

One thing I don't care for in the new SXSW set, no genres. The past two years the genre was filled out so I could sort through the metal in one sitting. I'd also know roughly what to expect (sometimes the band's name will do that as well) before it started playing.

I've been going through the bands that I rated over a 3 star in the previous sets and seeing if they're in the new one. Past results are no guarantee of future performance.

This download now puts me over total 15 days of music in my library.
That's 5514 songs & 20.86 GB

6.5 days of SXSW music alone. That's 2437 songs & 9.08 GB.

Once More

It's mid to late February and that means it's nearly time for SXSW. Which also means it's time for the SXSW mega torrent. This time there are 739 tracks in 3.1 GB, and this is part one. In the past the other parts were just small supplements. Nowhere near as large as part one.

If I run into any good train wrecks like in years past I'll pass them on. And I hope if you find something worth sharing you'll do so.

Rock on!

Songs I'm Sick Of At Work

We're doing the christmas music at the nursery since Thanksgiving and it's always the same songs over and over. There are (at the moment) two songs that I'm over and done with.

1) Barbra Streisand "A Few Of My Favorite Things" - I hate her phrasing, but most of all...this isn't a Christmas song. It's from The Sound Of Music.

2) Newsong "The Christmas Shoes" - I don't know if there is another song I hate more. And I know a lot of people LOVE this song.

Reasons I hate it.
a) It's manipulative. A song where there's a young boy with a dying mother on christmas eve isn't playing by the rules.
b) It's clichéd. The children choir at the end is over the top.
c) It's unbelievable. We're supposed to believe that a little boy "dirty from head to toe" is going to say things like, "Momma made Christmas good in at our house. Though most years she just did without."? I know it's a song, but come on!
d) The God in this song is a jerk. "I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me what Christmas is all about." So God is killing this little boy's mother just to teach you a generosity lesson? No thanks. That's not a God worthy of my worship.
e) If his mother really is about to die, possibly by the end of the song he should be at home, not buying a pair of shoes.

There are many other reasons, but I can't explain them in words. But this is one of those train wreck songs that you do have to listen to when it comes on just to witness the horror of it all.

Here it is synced up to Christmas lights.

Here's a homemade video.

Picking It Back Up

I decided to start finishing (is that even possible?) up on the SXSW music I've had for nearly two years now.

790 to go.

If I so through 10 songs a day that's only 79 days. Or about 2 and a half months. A small price to pay to finally get this monkey off my back. Of course, then it'll nearly be time for the 2007 SXSW monkey to hop on. I had better buy some bananas.

I think I'll cheat a little and tear through all the metal tonight. I figure there won't be much chance of me keeping any of those. Maybe I can get this done in 2 months.

EDIT: 8 minutes later. Done with the Metal. And now I'm down to 768 songs. I must say though, "Pssst! Hey, the lord is awesome" being only 46 seconds nearly made the cut. But it was too horrible to even go through 46 seconds of it. It wasn't "I Am The Lazer Viking" by any means.

Tis The Season

Since there are only 61 shopping days left I thought I'd give you a music suggestion.

One More Drifter In The Snow by Aimee Mann.

I did the pre-order thing and though I am generally one that says it should be early December before it's Christmastime, I'll be playing this from time to time for the next 2 months.

I'm not one that can say why something is good. I just know what I likes when I likes it...and I likes this. Not overdone, but different enough to have it's own place in your collection. And if you don't have holiday collection yet, this would be a nice place to start.

I'm going back to dreading the holidays now. You do what you want to.

Musical Quest

I'm trying to listen to all my 4 or 5 star rated songs in two weeks. That is 1088 songs. 2 days 20 hours.

To make this easier I have a playlist that contains all the songs that I've rated 4 or 5 and haven't been played in the last 2 weeks. Right now there are 148 songs remaining with a total time of about 8.5 hours.

Now I'm not just playing it through. I actually have to be in the room when it's on. It only counts as being played if it plays all the way to the end, and I'm not allowed to skip though the song.

The problem is that when midnight hits the songs that were played on 4/18 will come back on the playlist. So depending on how many I heard that day I might find myself with a much greater length of time to get through.

EDIT: It's now after midnight and I now have 232 songs to listen to. 14 hours. I guess I was off from work(s) two weeks ago.

Music Fun

I found this little app that shows you just what you have in your library. Top artists/albums/songs/genres. It also tallies up just how much time you've spent listening to music/how many songs have been played/average song length/average number of songs per day. You can even have the rating you've given songs weight how the overall rating goes.

Check it out here. It's donation-ware.

Check It Out

The guy that was at the same Laura Cantrell concert that I went to. The one that I linked to in the past because I got linked to without my knowledge just posted the trailer to the movie he wrote, "I'm Reed Fish". His name? Reed Fish.

Go take a look. It's the best trailer I've seen in a while. But to be honest, the last movie I saw in the theatre was Batman Begins, and I don't remember any trailers I saw that night.

Suggestion

I remember where I was when I first heard this song. I wrote down the time so I could look it up when KCRW posted their playlist in a couple days. I then promptly forgot about it and happened to remember a month or two later and I managed to track down the song.

Martin Sexton Diner from the album Black Sheep.

Give it a try. It was my favorite album of the year.

Album Titles

I'm always slightly disappointed when the name of an album is the same name as one of the songs.
Adrian Belew, Inner Revolution.

I'm a little happier when it's something else.
Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon.

But I'm happiest when the title of the album is a line from one of the songs.
Freedy Johnston, Right Between The Promises.
Laura Cantrell, Humming By The Flowered Vine.

Can you think of any yourself?

Guest Poster About Train Wrecks

This is from my brother in law Erik with his permission. We were discussing some really bad songs on the SXSW download. I offered a few, here are a few of his.

Take it away!

Train Wreck 1 - Maremaillette, "A Hawk & a Hacksaw" 7:55
Starts off with three minutes of Mariachi trumpet intro.  So far, so good, sounds like experimental/world music.  Uh oh, how did that lead into two minutes of harp, cello, and incidental percussion?  And why is it building so slowly? Wait!  I hear monks in lydian mode, and they're playing the accordion backed by some basso profundo organ.  Sounds good in the telling, but no, it doesn't sound good.  The coup de grace, the pit in the peach, the chicken bone in the throat comes in sometime around 6:20 - what pile of dreck would be complete without a bagpipe chanter solo? Just when you think "Thank Dog, it's over," fade in a poorly mic'd trap set, riffing.  Son, your mother and I want to talk to you about what you're doing in the basement all day.

Train Wreck 2 - Royal Space Force, "Uber Code" 21:01
I dare you to listen all the way through this.  How can a train wreck if it never leaves the station?  I'm not entirely sure, but it takes a little over 20 minutes.  My feeling is that this is one of those songs developed by a computer from some basic code fed into it, in this case by Royal Space Force, which I imagine as a pimply adolescent with ego issues.  It starts with probably eight minutes of dial-up interruptus, each phrase (ok, one phrase) repeated with slight variation, but never developing far before being stripped down into some other basic iteration.  Then come the space invaders.  They bleep.  They bloop.  They stay right where they are, at the top of the screen, seemingly afraid to descend into the digital static field.  I'd hesitate, too, if I were they.  The entire song is hesitant.  After 19:42 going nowhere but up & down half a chromatic scale, it resolves by backtracking rapidly to the opening theme, waiting to connect at 5600 baud.  Then the kid who wrote the code comes back to his room.  Convinced of his unsung genius, he burns this monstrosity to disc and off it goes to Austin, where people stare, shake their heads, and walk away.

Oh, crap, I just heard...
Train Wreck 3 - Knife Party, "The Crystal Tower" 3:06
OK, who let these brats in?  First crappy drum kit, kid? Who's the pre-teen on the Casio?  Your girlfriend? Did the guitarist quit and take away the only bit of talent your "band" ever had?  Look, it's important to get out there and cut your teeth.  Good for you, kids.  The song has promising start, with the screaming and guitar wailing, but when the guitar suddenly cuts out as the drummer grabs the sticks and the keyboard kicks in, it all comes to a crashing halt.  Keeping one beat would be nice, keeping it together would be even better.  I'm guessing the musical expression was limited by the 18 keys on the Casio.  Why not write some teen-angst words to hide the poor musicianship?  Tip for the maestro - next demo you send in, try to record it on a 4-track, not your dad's portable cassette player.  Yeeech.  Better luck next time.

Thanks Erik!

I'll let you all know when he starts his own blog so we can all enjoy his writing at greater length.

SXSW 2006

I've been checking the SXSW site for when (or even if) they were going to put up a collection of their music artists like they did before. I got the one from last year and it took me a week to download. I've been checking in more frequently since the festival starts in under a month, and yesterday they put it up.

So I start it and go to bed. I didn't really check on how long it would take since I figured it would be many days. Nope. It's done. All in one night.

I haven't had time to go through most of them (I just woke up!) yet, but there are 27 repeats from last year. I'm not saying the same artist, I'm saying the exact same song by that exact same artist. What a let down.

I still have about 300 songs to go through on last year's download, but I'll just combine the two years and start all over.

Here is the link for yourself. 2.5GB.

This Might Be The Worst Song EVER

I came across this song called Minor Details by the Wichita Stallions from last years SXSW download. It tries to be too much, and it doesn't do any of them well. This is not a review, just my thoughts of what I heard. Something like this must be shared with the world....to protect it from ever happening again.

The lyrics seem to be written by a 7th grader that just got dumped by his first girlfriend that he had for a week.

"I may never trust again. Hope that you'll never rest again. And I'm, I'm a gonna end up alone."
"I pray that I'll never be as selfish as you were to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

That "me" goes on for 10 seconds. I counted.

It goes from screaming "AGAINNNNN!" to a quiet bass and piano duet.

And by the end it's gone over the edge to, "You left me broken and mishapen"
"I know I will never ever trust again. And I pray that you'll never rest again. I'm a gonna end up alone."

Now I'm not saying I could do better, but I at least know that my stuff is only good in that kitschy kind of way.

The only problem I'm having is that it's like a car accident on the side of the road. I have to look, so I keep playing it just to revel in the glory of it's badness.

If you want to experience the madness for yourself check it out. Minor Details is the name of the train wreck to look for. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

And if you go to http://www.wichitastallions.com you'll see this...

Running Out Of TIme

If you'll recall, last March I downloaded the South By Southwest music collection.
Nearly 800 tracks.
About 2 days of music straight through.

Well, it's January now and I still have about 450 tracks to go. I'm hoping to get though these before they come out with another download that's even bigger this year.

Grudge

Today at the market I saw a kid with a shirt for The Offspring and it reminded me of why I hate them.

It was back in 1994 that the singer was one of the guest reviewers for the L.A. Times music section. So the way things worked then, they'd have actual music critics give their score (1-100) and then they'd have a couple guests give their score too. They'd add them up and take the average.

So this particular week they had what-his-name from The Offspring review Freedy Johnston's "This Perfect World" which is one of my favorites of all time.

The other people all gave it in the high 80's and 90's. Mr. Jerk-head gave it a 0. His comment was something like, "You guys know I'm in a punk band right?"

So because of his stupidity it dragged the total down into the 60 range.

They reviewed 4 albums. He either gave a 100 or a 0 in all cases. The Neil Young album got a 100 because he put a song with the title "Piece Of Crap". Smart dude!

So because of that incident over a decade ago I will forever hate The Offspring.
