Philanthropy

With all the recent news about Bill Gates going to work full time for his foundation, and now Warren Buffet giving all those billions to the same it got me thinking about what those super wealthy are doing with their money. I also wonder if we might be starting a wave of "giving is cool" rather than the "gimmie gimmie gimmie" that we've had for the past few decades.

Think about those people that really don't do a lot for society but get paid really well. Actors and athletes, I'm talking to you.

These are entertainers. They don't really do work that truly benefits the world. They pretend to be someone and make us laugh/cry/think/forget our troubles or they play a game...and they're good at it.

They also get paid exceeding well for it.

Just imagine what could happen with that $75 million that Tom Cruise got for Mission Impossible II. Let's just say that he kept $1 million (more money than most people will earn in their lifetime) and gave the rest to charity. But it's not just Tom Cruise. Let's get everyone in on this. Jim Carreys been getting over $20 million for quite a few films.

And athletes. Here, they work for part of the year. Playing a game they love. Earning millions. To play a game. To live a nice happy life I'd say that $100,000 a year would be pretty sweet. I'm looking at the Yankee's and their median is $2.9 million. The lowest paid gets $328,600. Even when you go down to the team with the lowest overall payroll they dip down to 327,000.

They play a game 162 times a year. Plus Spring Training for a couple months.

Imagine what could happen if this giving thing caught on.

I'm not really getting to a specific point, just bringing up some ideas.
