Living in Dryden
We have as yet failed to secure very satisfactory notes of the pioneerfamilies of Willow Glen. Of the first three families to locate therein 1798, so far as we have been able to learn, the Clausons have nodescendants now residing in the town, while Ezekiel Sanford and DavidFoote are the ancestors of quite a number of the present inhabitants.John Southworth, whose father, Thomas Southworth, came to Willow Glenin 1806, will be the subject of a separate chapter. Joshua Phillips, who owned and perhaps built the tannery on the now vacant corner ofWillow Glen, was early a prominent citizen, being a Member of Assemblyfrom this county in 1820 and a supervisor of the town in 1839. He cameto Dryden from Nassau, Rensselaer county, about 1806, or, as some say,in 1811, and was a major in the State Militia. His wife, whom hemarried in Rensselaer county, was Huldah Bramhall, a very estimablewife and mother. They had no daughters, but twelve sons, one of whom,Archibald, now resides on the former homestead of his father-in-law,Peter Mulks, near Slaterville, and another, Albert, who married intothe Twogood family, is still living at Merton, Waukesha county, Wis.,91 years of age, with another brother, Henry, whose age is 80. Amongthe others was George W. Phillips, who was once prominent in businessin Dryden village. Joseph Bramhall, a brother of Mrs. Phillips, was acarpenter and early resident of Willow Glen, leaving children whostill perpetuate from him the name of Bramhall. He was an assessor ofthe town at the time of his death, which resulted from consumption. His widow afterwards married Israel Hart and became the mother ofChas. I. Hart, of Dryden.

These trust deeds were to transfer from the Lord
Proprietor to the inhabitants in each town the
vacant lands in each town, subject to quit-
rents. The deeds for Saco, Wells and Kittery
are missing , but those we know of survived
precariously , and there is no reason to doubt
that they were given to all the towns. They
were all executed in Boston 26 July 1684.

At the opposite extremity of the old city -
West End - is another terrace hill, bolder even
than its eastern fellow, that is called Bramhall's
Hill. ........ The weathiest residential
section of Portland extends back from the Western
Promenade. There is abundant evidance that this
locality has assumed more pretentious airs than
it was wont to present when George Bramhall
operated his tannery here in the early history of
the town.

On the 13th of November of that Year (1678) Edward
Allen, of Dover, N.H. conveyed to George Bramhall,
of Portsmouth, all that tract of land, which George
Cleeves had sold to his father, Hope Allen, in 1660,
except 50 acres which he had previously disposed of.
The whole tract contained 400 acres, extending
westerly to round marsh at the narrow of the Neck,
and included the hill which now bears the name of
its old proprietor. Bramhall was a tanner: he moved
here in 1680, and established a tannery upon the
flat under the hill near the entrance upon Vaughan's
bridge, where the remains of the vats may still be
traced.
