Wednesday, August 6:Lyric, Epigram, & Elegy

Readings: All In Knox, read introductions for each poet and locate their homeland on the maps of Greek and Roman authors

  • Greek: Archilochus 1, 9, 10, 14, “…But if You’re in a Hurry”; Alcaeus 6; Sappho 1-13; Xenophanes 4-5; Theognis 1, 4 (Those who have read Oedipus Rex will recognize the sentiment in this poem); Anacreon 1, 4, 6; Pindar Third Pythian Ode; Greek Anthology (introduction p. 574); Antipater of Salonica 1; Marcus Argentarius 2
  • Roman: Catullus 7, 8, 13, 85, 101 (N.B. for some reason these poems are out of order in Knox); Horace I.4, I.5, I.9 IV.7; Propertius II.15
