Tuesday,
July 29: Satire Ancient & Modern
(mostly ancient)
Readings:
Juvenal, Selection from Satire I (Knox
pp. 813-816); Lucian’s True History (all in Handout)
Highly
recommended optional reading: Juvenal, Selection from
Satire III: Knox pp. 816-826 (if you
don't have enough time to read it all, read a few pages)
Questions
to think about:
- What authorial persona does
Juvenal adopt? Why does he write satire?
What are his targets?
- Why would Lucian
write such a fantastic story that he admits is "all lies"?
Pay attention to any time
you see a parody of ancient text we have read. Does his story
remind you on any contemporary tales?
