Polar coordinated, and distorted.
One becomes the other
And resemblances resolve
In a colored Rorschach test
And an image that evolves.
These transforming neo mandalas are inpired by the mandala traditions found around the world. Like traditional mandalas, my work references the infinitely detailed complexity found in nature. They are not only inpired by nature's fractal complexity, but also aim to actually simulate the iterative tranformations that generate order out of complexity in nature. Just as nature evolves new form out of the implicite order in the complexity of chaotic systems, these images follow their own path to order as they evolve from an original complexity Into new connected patterns.
I start with my own complex line drawings or sometimes a photo of a natural scene. I then undertake multiiple transformations on the original using photoshop functions to simulate the genetically moderated transformations in the development of natural forms. People often see other natural shapes in my work as the brain identifies the symetrical forms and curved lines as similar to these same forms in nature. By the blending of the multiple layers in ways that filter or add to other layers I am also simulating the stochastic processes by which organisms produce their forms, colors and relationships. In many cases I provide the layers intact to allow viewer/users to continue these manipulations with new parameters and blending options to create new images.
They are created to be seen in high resolution because the complexity, like in traditional mandalas, is part of the experience that induces different states of consciousness. The brain is provided with more ordered detail than it can resolve in the normal way of seeing and instead must adopt a more holistic perception of the pattern. The mandala form brings a connecting archetypal form that pulls the complexity into a greater whole. Because my images are also connected as a transforming series this same way of seeing connects the brain to even richer layered complexity.
What I can deliver on the web is limited at this time to lower resolution images and animations, but I can sell a variety higher resolution images on DVD. These are currently custom burned to provide what you might need: photoshop, TIFF, and other file formats for individual images you can put into a variety of image display programs, from powerpoint to iphoto to most screen savers.
