Inspired by the Artwork of Simon Silva
Project
Description:
After a visit by Simon Silva, each student completed a piece of artwork
in the style of this Hispanic artist. Their art depicts family members
that students perceive to be hard-working. The art will serve as the
inspiration for each student to compose an iMovie about their family
member's important contributions to our culture.
While students could create paper books with written stories, the
variety of elements available for student expression in iMovie will
support students with diverse learning styles and multiple
intelligences. The possibilities for creativity and the opportunities
to use technology will motivate students to more carefully prepare and
compose their presentations, resulting in higher student achievement.

Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to demonstrate their
understanding of one way to organize and create a work of art that
expresses their ideas and feelings by completing a piece of art in the
style of Simon Silva.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate their
understanding of the diversity of our American culture and the value of
each of its members by composing and sharing iMovies about their
families’ contributions.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate their
understanding of ways to effectively communicate ideas in multimedia
presentations by the appropriate use of: language, ideas,
organization, and delivery in the creation of their iMovies.
|
Implementation:
Students were asked to complete a think-sheet that guided them in
considering which family member each wanted to depict in their artwork.
After completion of their art, students used an organizer to interview the family
members and gather information for their movies that would communicate
their family member's vocation
and other contributions to our American society and culture.
Students next collected information and artifacts from home. Each
student’s art and story will be put together into an iMovie, along
with subtitles, still images, sound clips, and/or other elements that
effectively
support his or her message. The movies will be compiled and shared with
peers at school and with family members during student-led conferences
in May.

Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed on their
engagement with the art activity and whether the final
project
successfully communicates their ideas and feelings.
2. Students will be assessed on their understanding
of the contributions their families have made to our American culture
by communicating the story of one hard-working family member in an
iMovie. Whole group discussion as we share our stories will assess
whether students have gained a greater understanding of their own
families’ contributions to the diversity of the American culture.
3. During rehearsed, oral presentations, inspired by
a different piece of art, students will be pre-assessed on their
presentation skills using ODE’s speaking scoring guide. This same
scoring guide will be used to assess student’s iMovie presentations.
Both presentations will be assessed in the areas of: ideas, language,
organization and delivery. These two sets of data can then be
compared to assess whether students were more academically successful
in presenting their ideas with the added use of technology.
