snakes

animal adaptation
- changes animals have made in body form or behavior that help them to survive in their natural environments


predator
- an animal that eats another animal


prey
- an animal that is eaten by another animal


habitat
- the natural environment in which an animal lives


migrate
- to move from one region to another and then back again; Animals migrate to find food, a better climate, to raise their young, or for safety.


natural resources
- the food, water sources and shelter that are found in an animal's habitat


hibernation
- a deep sleep in which an animals breathing and heart rate are slowed to conserve energy; Animals need very little to eat when they hibernate, surviving the long winter on their stored fat layer.


mimicry
- Some harmless animals look or act like an animal that is dangerous or poisonous, to try to keep predators away. The harmless Scarlet King Snake has colors and markings that make it look like a poisonous Eastern Coral Snake. You can see them both in the picture at the top of this page.


camouflage
- the protective coloration that allows an animal to blend into its surroundings
