More Microsoft Woes

In case you had not heard, Microsoft is sunsetting the Windows NT product line. This is probably why Symantec and others are discontinuing their support of the product.

As for myself (and others that I know), NT has been a good operating system and there is no need to upgrade. I know all the arguments - better OS bla bla bla but what about the fact that I don't NEED an upgrade? Perhaps I have a system that works perfectly fine. I don't need Windows 2003, or 2003 Server for that matter.

One reason that I don't need these operating systems is that my NT server does a few things - and it does them well. It provides a network domain controller, and user authentication. If I upgrade (at a cost of over $1,000 just for the OS) I will also need to upgrade the box that the software is on.

With a base price of $1,000 for the OS and a price upwards of $1,000 for a box good enough to run it - I am being soaked for $2,000 by an industry for a product I don't want.

Well, I have a solution. I said a while ago that I wanted to migrate as many boxes as possible to Mac - over a period of time of course. This is just another nail in the MS coffin for me. For half of the price of Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, I can get Mac OS X Server. OS X will provide all the services I need, as well as all the services I would get from Microsoft - and then some.

As to the hardware required to run OS X? Oh well, last year I purchased an iMac, this year I purchased a new G5. OS X will run on either one just fine thank you.

One less copy of Windows to struggle with - one less copy of Symantec to struggle with. Could it get any easier to make the decision to switch? I think not.
