Hate Mail

A number of local news outlets including Fox, Topix.Net, WBAL, WJZ (GOOGLE SEARCH), picked up the story of a highly inflammatory racist e-mail circulating around the Maryland government - specifically the Police departments. An investigation was started after an Eastern District supervisor notified the Baltimore Police Department's (BPD) Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance (EEOC) section.

A statement released stated "The Baltimore Police Department has no tolerance for employees who make racially insensitive remarks or distribute racially insensitive material".

As of this writing the rest of the story was printed only by WJZ in this article. Apparently the author has been identified and instead of being fired for racial intolerance - the employee, according to Maryland Transportation Secretary Robert Flanagan, got the point. He has been spoken to and "proper disciplinary action will be taken". He further stated that the "gentleman did apologize and acknowledged that it was totally unacceptable."

Now, call me silly but a point of order here. I am not one to go out screaming that everyone needs to be fired all forms of infractions...but, Maryland did go on the record as stating that they have "no tolerance for employees who make racially insensitive remarks". No tolerance means just that. Zero, none. Further - unless I missed something during my educational studies - a person who makes such remarks cannot literally be identified as a "gentleman". Such a person violates the definition.

So apparently, it turns out, that it is partially OK to make racist comments, and Maryland does have some form of tolerance on such issues - as long as you are a minority.
