The collective mind of the party is eternal Winston

I am at a loss. When I was growing up - I was taught a number of things. One of those was the concept that one thing which helped make America great was the concept of the melting pot. For those of you who are more recent arrivals, or perhaps who - for reasons known only to the politicrats - the concept of the melting pot was this. Basically, we were always the social outcasts of every society on earth. We came to this great nation for one reason or another - but in many cases those reasons were either because we:

a) Left our homeland due to political persecution
b) Left our homeland due to religious persecution
c) Left our homeland because we felt a lack of opportunity existed there

America was then, and is still now - a place where one's wildest dreams can come true. If you work hard and, generally, are honest in your dealings. Sure, there are those who get ahead by being dishonest - but generally they get theirs too. The concept continued that it was this vast experience, which came from many nations into one, and which "melted" into a new society that made us strong, unique, powerful, wealthy, etc etc.

But now - we have forgotten what made us what we are. We are more concerned with being the new Spain, the new Africa, the new Cuba, the new [insert country here]. And here is what I mean. We no longer have ANY national pride as Americans. What we have is a divisive mentality that "I am not an American - I am a [insert heritage here]-American". Such concepts only serve to divide us and I believe are the ideas and designs of those who wish to keep us divided. By saying that "I am a Euro-American" I am separating myself from African-Americans, Cuban-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native-Americans, etc (by the way - for clarity those were in alphabetical order). I begin to see myself as a sub-group of Americans. Psychologically I see myself as different, as unique from all other forms of Americans. Almost, as a sub-culture. Some would say this is a good thing. A way for people of common heritage to bond. I say that it is a way to tear this country apart. If we don't, or won't, seek commonality amongst ourselves then we will never find a common ground. Without a common ground from which to build all others, everything else fails including the ability to understand and accept our differences as our common strength.

That is an important thought - one that our ancestors understood. Everyone brings something to the table. Now, granted - the history of this country isn't always one to be completely proud of. And, if you look at it from an historical point of view we are fairly young as a nation. We have in some 200 years grown up pretty good. But, yes we have our downfalls. It took us far too many years to abolish slavery - a concession made during the signing of our Declaration of Independence and finally resolved when some southern states attempted to dissolve themselves from the United States. Depending on where you went to school - either "The War of Northern Aggression" or "The War Against Slavery" ensued. But we as a nation survived. In the end we banded together.

Now - we are tearing ourselves apart. We have come to the point where we are dividing ourselves into sub-cultures and at the same time we are screaming at each of the OTHER sub-culters that YOU MUST UNDERSTAND ME! Further, we are completely loosing sight of everything else that is important. Take the recent Mel Gibson incident as an example.

Mr. Gibson was stopped for drunken driving. He subsequently made numerous sexist remarks about female police officers (which received little if no air-time in the news) and a number of anti-semetic remarks. And what has been his crime? For what has he been vilified in the press? Was it for drinking way to much then getting behind the wheel of a car - and placing himself potentially in the position of either becoming or causing another national statistic on the result of drunk driving? No, he has been openly tried and found guilty in the courts of public opinion for breaking one of the highest laws of the land. Making anti-semetic remarks.

I understand the concern over thoughts of hate towards one race or another. It is itself a despicable thing. We live in an age where we are supposed to have learned from the past. Where we are suppose to love an cherish one another regardless of any of our differences. Where we are suppose to accept everyone for what they feel, think and believe. I know there are people out there that aren't like that and I hate those people. (For those of you who didn't catch it - that was sarcasm).

Look, George Orwell wrote a whole book on the concept of convicting someone for their thoughts. And, while despicable, and unacceptable in the current court of public opinion - think about the position you are taking when you vilify someone for their thoughts or their speech. You are not showing the kindness and patience that you demand of them - you yourself are lowering yourself to their level. You are not showing this person that you are in-fact kind and loving person - that perhaps their drunken and slovenly opinions are not only ill-spoken, but misplaced - no you are showing them that you are exactly what they think you are.

There are reasons why our founding fathers passed a Constitutional Amendment which prohibits Congress from passing any law which abridges the right of free speech. That reason is once you begin to censor, once you begin to lock people up for their thoughts or the words that they say, it opens the door to complete domination of the population by the Government. Once that happens, no one is safe. You might think that today the Government will help you and keep Mr. Gibson from spewing his filth - but in a few years the Government might keep you from speaking your mind on other topics as well - such as the ability to identify yourself as a Euro-American.
