Snack - or Meal?
My wife and I have been married for a number of
years now - and each of us has our own, eccentricities. Recently she commented
that one of mine which bothers her the most is what I consider a meal. So, in
accordance with her wishes, here are my simple rules for
eating.
Any meal eaten in the morning
is breakfast. It's the only time of the day that breakfast can be eaten. There
are many foods which can be considered breakfast foods including eggs, hash
browns (but not 'farm potatoes'), steak (if served with eggs), pancakes, cereal,
toast etc. Breakfast can occur any time between midnight and about 10 a.m.
depending primarily upon what you are doing around midnight. But, breakfast
between midnight and 2 a.m. typically only occurs if you are working late and
don't expect to be awake before 10 a.m. Typically however, if your work
involves heavy labor, you probably want dinner - unless you are going to bed
within the next hour or two, in which case breakfast would be a better
choice.
Lunch and dinner is what
bothers her the most. You see for me, lunch and dinner require that a meal be
prepared. Unlike breakfast which is just breakfast food, a meal must consist of
a main course, preferably meat, and must be hot. Soup is soup - not a meal.
Same thing with a sandwich - however, if the sandwich is sizable and hot it can
be considered the 'meal' for lunch. But only for lunch - and typically must also
include a sandwich ala soup and sandwich. Lunch can only be eaten between 11 and
2:30 p.m..
Dinner is a whole 'nother
beast. Unlike lunch - a sandwich cannot be considered a meal for dinner.
Dinner can be eaten any time between say 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. depending upon what
you are doing. For example, if you have a light snack (a sandwich perhaps)
around the dinner hour - then go out for an evening of partying, you could
easily find yourself at the local Denny's at 2 or 3 a.m. for
"dinner".
However, at such a late hour
(or early depending on how you look at it) you could be looking for some
breakfast. In the case of a late night of partying, or working for that matter,
between the hours of 2 and 3 you really can have either breakfast or dinner.
But most certainly the food in this case must be hot - breakfast cereal simply
won't make it.
Hope this clears it all
up - and of course I reserve the right to change the "rules for a meal"
especially since we have such a laugh over it.
