F.U. Award: Symantec - for Techless Support and Forcing Needless OS
Upgrades
I have been a loyal Norton AV user for more years
than I can remember - that is until
today.
Recently I tried to upgrade my
virus signatures from Symantec. It wouldn't let me. According to Symantec, my
subscription period was expired. No problem, I will just renew. Not so much.
No matter what I tried I could not get a virus signature
renewal.
So I called Symantec and was
informed that they didn't support my software any more. Funny, according to
their website, as recently as 9 January 2005 they upgraded the signatures for
the product I run.
This did not
dissuade the (foreign) tech support person who replied that I needed to upgrade
my copy of Norton Antivirus to NAV2005. When I pointed out that the Operating
System I was running was NT 4 Server - they kindly responded that I of course
first needed to upgrade to the latest Operating System Server edition. Then
when I pointed out that NAV2005 didn't support Servers - she was at a loss and
stated that tech support was not available for my product, that if I needed any
further help I could get it online through their knowledge
base.
Yet another reason I continue to
change all my systems over to Mac. As soon as my subscriptions expire - I'm
dumping Symantec from all my desktops and going with AVG (or the like) until I
can complete the changeover.
