Telemarketers?



Recently I decided to put the power of my computer to work and installed a complete voice answering / voicemail / fax system. It's pretty nice, and kudos to the folks over at Ovolab for their excellent product Phlink. This product alone makes my mac a worth while purchase.

Anyway, I thought I would start keeping a list of the stupid telemarketers that call and don't leave any messages. Since most of them block their numbers, and don't leave messages I don't know who they are. If any of my readers can identify the companies that go with these numbers - please send me an e-mail and I will update the listing. However, I would like the name of the Telemarketing firm as well as the client for whom they are calling.

I called back the Chase Bank Marketing Department (888-872-2629) and spoke to a representative. I asked that my number be added to their do not contact list. The operator was polite, took my information and informed me that it would take up to 30 days - so I might continue receiving calls......and I have. To the tune of 2 per day. So, tonight (3 June 2005) I called again. I figured since they liked calling (and not leaving messages) I would at least return the favor. They now have an automated system to have your number added to the do not call list. You get a confirmation code, and a warning that it will take 30 days to be removed. Great (sarcastic sigh).

And I thought that automated advertisers like this one were illegal in my state. 2005-03-17-1318-8667843968.m4a Of course I guess it doesn't count since the advertiser (Z100) is in New York.

Parting shot -

I want to thank all of you who took the time to write me. But, before any more of you do write me:
- Yes, I know there is a national do not call registry and yes we are already on it and yes we have been on it for quite a while (over a year).
- Yes, I know that some faxes put a removal number on their faxes, but I have found that by dialing these numbers (much like regular e-mail spam removal) the number of faxes you receive just increases. I believe (although I cannot prove) that these $#!7$ are doing EXACTLY the same thing as spammers. Once you "opt out" they simply sell your number to other fax spammers, so I don't do that anymore. I believe this is why I am getting 2, 3 and 4 copies of the same faxes only minutes (sometimes seconds) apart.
