I See Dumb People

I never cease to be amazed by how many stupid people there are around. Just, take a moment and look around. It's totally amazing.

In 2003 the SciFi Channel remade a series, Battlestar Galactica (or BSG as it is known in the chats). Right after the initial miniseries aired, The Internet Movie Database was awash with comments . Among them were many complaints that the cast did not properly represent the cultural diversity of the world. The cast didn't have enough African Americans, Hispanic Americans, ad nasseum. Well, I posted a little message about the fact that the story is one of examining the human question, the show even directly posed the question "Why are we worth saving - are we worth saving". I asked which character would the posters wish to be, say, African American - the Executive Officer? Well the XO is a drunk and I'm sure that would fly really well. How about, the Commanding Officer - oh, well he is already Hispanic. Hmm, the President? No - she is female. How about .... you get the idea. I ended my post stating that either you liked the mini-series or you didn't. That it was probably a precursor by SciFi to see if there was a following and if so, they would probably bring it back as a regularly weekly series. Turns out, two years later I was right (such a burden to be correct so frequently).

So, now the mini series has been picked up for it's second year and on slashdot.com people are bitching about a variety of issues including - are you ready? The original Boomer was African American and has been replaced by Grace Park(an attractive actress of Korean descent); the original Starbuck was male (replaced by actress Katee Sackhoff); the Cylons have religion and it too closely represents the American 9/11 issues.

Hey folks - it's a damn story. For as long has humans have been around we have been telling stories. Do you know what the purpose of a story is? It's to get a point across - typically a moral issue or some other issue of interest to the human condition and the growth of humanity as a whole.

So, BSG closely resembles the American condition. Surprise - it's an American production, with an American Creator, American Producer and mostly American cast. It's about terrorism. Surprise - we recently had a big terrorist act out here. The President wasn't elected - there are many in America who state this is currently the case. The President is weak when it comes to military affairs. The military can't always be trusted, and our enemy has religion while ours has failed us - well the only thing I can say about that is (a) have you read the papers lately and (b) the show does come from the Peoples State of California (primarily). So of course - all this is true.

What else is true is that it is a story to examine the human condition, using the backdrop of the original series leveraged by current affairs. Gee - you can't say that about too many shows. Why - just look at Star Trek (TOS). It was filmed in the 60's and they never did any shows addressing Racism, or Geopolitical beliefs (Capitalism v Communism) or fanatical religious zealots - did they?

I find the show to be refreshing, interesting, fairly true to life regarding life in the military. I find the characters with all of their flaws to be believable, primarily because they have those flaws. In short, I find it to be the best new show in a long time on SciFi, probably since Stargate and that didn't even start on the SciFi channel.

So everyone, take a breather and try to figure it out just a little. Idiots like all of you are why we have fewer innovative productions like Momento (the film told the story backwards you morons!); long idiotic filled chats about Total Recall (it was a friggin dream!) and movies like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. Don't understand that one? Carl Reiner and Steve Martin are spoofing the fact that the audience today is sooooo incredibly stupid that they (the hero and villan) actually argue (in the film) over who gets to explain the plot to you morons.

My head is going to explode.
