cdr - bit distant - Sound 3 - time 99min - low gen tape? - tracks 27

This recording may not be from the 11th October and could be from the 9th. It’s certainly from the Sheffield Lyceum as Joe namechecks the venue on the tape.

Another fine performance particularly on the encores from this mini tour but this is the worst sound recording of a well documented tour and therefore is non-essential.

Venue
The Sheffield Lyceum is a prestigious theatre still in use today and was typical of the larger theatre type venues on this tour.

This recording has a thin, fairly distant and lifeless sound making it the least enjoyable recording from this mini tour. Apparently from a low generation source it’s shortcomings presumably relate from an inadequate recording set up and equipment. It is far from terrible though with some clarity and all the instrumentation and vocals can be heard. It has a very thin sound though, fairly distant, undynamic and dull.

It does contain the rare live Innoculated City and appears to be complete.

The recording begins with the sirens intro and chat near the taper. “Good evening and welcome to the Sheffield Lyceum, ..yeah this is The Clash here” says Joe. But the audience could be forgiven as the band start with the gentle intro to Broadway. The performances are good and the highlights of the main set are White Man In Hammersmith Palais, Magnificent Seven, “blast from the past” Clash City Rockers, a passionate Koka Kola and an imaginative Charlie Don’t Surf.

The first CD cuts out at the end of London Calling and the 2nd CD begins at the beginning of Clampdown. The first very strong encore begins with Ghetto Defendant followed by Stay Free not played since June 80. The encore then takes off with a no pause charge through Brand New Cadillac, Safe European Home, Janie Jones and ends with a great Complete Control with an excellent long building intro.

The second encore begins after an edit with Armagideon Time and the rare Innoculated City (sung by Joe). The band then wrap it up in style blasting through Career Opportunities and ending with London’s Burning.
