There is some confusion over the date of this gig. The date on the recording matches that of the poster. However whilst the poster states Le Stadium on the 16th Octobre, Johnny Greens book ‘A Riot of our Own’ states Le Palace and would date this a couple of days later. For a short Paris/Benelux Tour there seems a gap to the Brussels gig on the 22nd.

The Clash on Tour LP

A seven song edited recording of this gig made up one side of the widely available The Clash On Tour bootleg LP, occasionally refered to as Tommy Guns LP [due to inner labels]. The LP contains edited sets from

Paris - The Bataclan - 29 Sept 1977
Paris - Le Stadium -16 Oct 1978 more info

Both shows are edited down for the LP. Fuller tapes exist.

The full tape of the 1977 gig [and the full tape of the 78 gig] have an excellent sound. Both superior to whats on this boot vinyl.

The LP sound quality is reasonable. Easily listenable with some minimal distortion on the first side. Side 2 is a bit more muddy in sound.

The Bataclan - Punk festival 29 Sept 77

A decent sound that suffers only minor distortions in the vocals. The sound lacks a decent range and is a touch flat, a little distant too, yet with a fair degree of clarity. The bass is there, but is lost in the sound. The fuller tape is slighlty better.

Notable highlights include a great version of Complete Control, better sounding versions of the infant White Man, and the The Prisoner and City of the Dead which have begun to show up. London's Burning has been contorted to Paris is Singing at the end.

Le Stadium 16 Oct 78

Again a decent sound if a little flat, not to dissimilar to the other show on the LP.

A fair degree of clarity and maybe a touch more range in the sound on this one though. You can just make out the bass chords though the clarity overall is quite reasonable, with only very mild distortion. The fuller tape has marginally a better sound eminating from a 1st generation source .

The tracks from the second album Give Em Enough Rope, are beginning to show up. Guns on the Roof and Drug Stabbing Time.

What is of most interest here though is the detour at the end of Police and Thieves into the Ramones Blitzkreig Bop. Great. This version was copied and hidden on the official bonus CD [USA only] issued with the 2000 remasters titled Rockers Galore.

the full source

This is an excellent audience recording, only tempered by some master tape ageing and poor Clash equipment, with all instrumentation clear particularly the drums and guitars, however the bass is there but not focused and there is some top end distortion. Overall there is much clarity and reasonably good/widish range of sound.

Comparing the two it would seem as if the LP is a lower generation copy of the master than this and consequently is a notch poorer in quality. It is a bit more flattish. A full gig version later circulated but with lesser sound than the LP. This is an excellent 1st generation serious upgrade cdr from both the old tape and the boot LP, containing the whole gig, so keep an eye open for this one.

compared with other 78 tapes

Paris has a clearer sound with a better mix than another good tape of the period, Music Machine (24/Jul/78). The sound level does drop at the start of Complete Control, the opening track. Vocals on the first 9 songs are somewhat distant, but much clearer than Music Machine, but before the start of Stay Free there is an edit and the sound improves particularly on the vocals. This second half of the recording certainly warrants a good rating.

New Speedway LP

This source material seems lifted froth Clash on Tour LP and is lesser to the full tape. It contains just 3 tracks from Paris 78.
Police and Thieves
Blitzkreig Bop
Londons Burning

plus 11 tracks from Florence 81

The LP contains nothing new.

Visit the Clash on Stage website for a comprehensive catalogue of unofficially released CD's and Vinyl.

Rockers Galore and Police and Thieves

Given away free with the remasters [USA only], this CD had a hidden bonus track Police and Thieves at the very end following a long period silence. The source for this track is the Lp and not the superior cdr of the full recording in circulation.

This is a very fine performance, with loads of heavy guitar fills from Mick. There is very little chat from Joe, not even in his pigeon French, and the band seem to be on a proficient run through of regular numbers.

I Fought the Law is performed for the first time and is played early in the set.

The obvious standout is the segue in Police and Thieves into the Ramones, Blitzkreig Bop. Probably one of the clearest versions available alongside Music Machine 24/7/78

Other highlights include fired up versions of Protex Blue, Janie Jones, English Civil War and London’s Burning (with an ad lib from Joe).

Tour & Gig Reviews

A Clash Of Interests
Miles, Time Out,
15 December 1978Will success spoil Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Topper Headon and Joe Strummer? Miles chronicles the decline of a movement and the rise of a rock band. IT'S BEEN a long time since anybody regarded The Who as a mod band, the Beatles as exponents of Merseybeat, or Bob Dylan as a folk-rocker...

These dates have changed and reflect A Riot of Our Own, the NME and tape details.

Belfast was the first night, Dublin the day after, a day off in London before Paris. The remaining dates fit around the Belgium tape and A Riot of Our Own. Several French dates are missing after Paris

Oct 13 Belfast, University SU, Queens Hall
Johnny Green (A Riot of Our Own p106) states this was the opening of the tour. Date from NME gig review.
Oct 14 Top Hat, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
with Berlin
Oct 16 Le Stadium, Paris
Johnny Greens book states this was Le Palace (Le Palace is the promotion company for many French gigs). As the poster says, its the 16th October at Le Stadium.
Oct 20 The Stokvishal, Arnhem, Holland
I went a concert of The Clash at the Stokvishal in Arnhem (Holland) on friday, October 20 1978. I don't know for sure if my agenda is completely right, but it seems right. The Stokvishal was a great place at this time, it was an old factory hall based on the, during the Arnhem battle of 1945, completely distroyed  area close to the Arhem bridge.
Other concerts I visited at that time at the Stokvishal: Iggy Pop, Cure, Only Ones, Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, Specials, Madness, Theatre of Hate...
Oct 21 "Le Home" Cinema, Lewen, Nr Liege, Belgium
Johnny Greens book A Riot of Our Own (p109) suggests a Belgium gig at Leuven just outside Brussels, following a drive up from Paris. Some suggestion that this gig followed the Brussels gig. 400 people there.
Oct 22 Ancienne Belgique, Brussels
some tapes have this labeled the 30th. The recording (Joe) I.D.'s the venue as Brussels but Johnny Greens book A Riot of Our Own (p109) suggests the Begium date of the 22nd was Leuven just outside Brussels. Around 1500 people at the gig.
Oct 23 The Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland.
both these last two gig are noted on p110 of A Riot of Our Own.
Oct 25 Roxy Theatre, Harlesden, London
Postponed on the 9th September, resheduled date of September 25th postponed and also further resheduled date of 14th October postponed. New GLC restrictions limited tickets to 900, so a second night scheduled for the other 700.

Whirlwind supported. I do not know about the 26.10.78. Free t-shirts (Tommy Gun) given to audience for being messed around previously. I have two. Colin

Nov 29 Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke
the 29th November '78 wasn't the Stoke Mandeville concert. '78 was with the Slits, was more rock, less anarchic, better musically, but I was a bit disappointed all the same (that isn't to say it was a bad concert, but compared to the first..). We weren't allowed backstage after the concert. Joe insisted that everyone got in for £2,25 whether they were advance sales or not, threatening not to play otherwise. (1)

the gig line up was the clash slits and the innocents, viv and the rest of the slits came into the crowd to watch the clash autographs were given, when the clash arrived for the sound check, they also signed loads of stuff for the group of fans at the back door, which included me 14 years old and a clash fan then (2 nacro_killer)

"During the drum intro for Tommy Gun, Topper hit himself in the eye with a drumstick, so joe shouted "tommy gun!, with one eye!" (Tim)

I was at the same gig, had an amazing night, fist of all Topper was playing so maically his drum stick snapped in half and I managed to get the top half that flew off...and then after the gig me and my mates managed to get in the dressing room, sitting on the floor with the band talking, they all signed my Sort It Out Tour poster, unbelievable! (Shaun)

Nov 30 Wirrina Stadium, Peterborough

Dec 5 University Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland

Dec 6 University, Liverpool
?????? Brighton Top Rank
I saw the Clash at the Brighton top Rank in '78 or possibly the first half of '79, can't see it listed anywhere, anyone else remember it? It was well before London Calling, they opened with English Civil War, I remember it cos Topper let me and some other kids in the side door as you were sposed to be 21 to get in and the bouncers weren't having any of it! I was 16 at the time I'm pretty sure, still at school anyway and i left in '79. I'd love to know the date of the gig.
Dec 12 Pavillion Bath
This gig definately took place. Thx for info.
