speed and ageing problems...

Another excellent fast and furious performance but not quite as a good a recording (or performance) as Zurich a week earlier.

Joe tells the audience before the encore that “we’re all sick in the band, do you understand” as the reason for what the band obviously considered a below par performance. However the recording shows little evidence of this with the band still blasting through the set in their inimitable style.

This good, fairly low generation recording is of almost all the gig; there are a few small edits.

The sound is enjoyable with a good degree of clarity though it does have some speed and ageing problems with some spots of wear as well. There is some distortion throughout which may well be from the over amped equipment rather than the limitations of the recording equipment.

Vocals are good but somewhat distant, Mick’s suffers particularly. Drums not bad, almost no bass but good guitars.

The recording fades in after the opening bars of London’s Burning. All the performances are good but not exceptional. A very good Police & Thieves fades out during Mick’s solo but fades back in almost immediately only losing a few seconds.

I’m So Bored With The USA is a highlight with different verses: “Yankee television in your living room, know all about …” rest is hard to decipher but the taste of cola gets a mention.

What’s My Name gets some different words too and the band now blast through to Garageland. At the start of the encore Joe explains that the band are sick and then there’s a gap before he says, “we’re waiting for Mick Jones to do his hair” An early indication of the problem that would later cause the band’s break-up.

The Clash, sick or not put in a terrific White Riot (or White Christmas as Joe intro’s it), which goes immediately into the second 1977.

The Clash at Dad's Dancehall Malmö 7 Oct 1977
(Brief translation of the review)

First of the local support bands was New Bondage from Lund who got the crowd with them, they played their own song plus Wayne County's "Cream In My Jeans".

Next band was Problem from Malmö, they didn't do so well. Had borrowed some equipment from The Clash.

The Clash gets a top review, there's no "new" info in the review except that Topper is called a Johnny Rotten look a like!

The interview with the Clash after soundcheck

Joe - They said that the Jam had a succes when they played here
Paul - We have to play better then...
Noncha Allt - Have you heard what happened to the Stranglers when they played here?
Joe - Oh yeah...
Noncha Allt - Where are you going to play tomorrow?
Paul - Some place called Ronneby
Noncha Allt - It was there The Jam got eggs thrown at them...where did you played yesterday?
Paul - I don't remember, do you Mick?
Mick - It was in Hamburg around 1000 people in the audience
Noncha Allt- Was it good?
Mick - Yeah, really
Noncha Allt - Was there any punks there?
Mick - A few but the main thing is that you're into the music not that you are a punk
Noncha Allt - I mean that in Germany everyone seems to listen to electronic music like Kraftwerk
Paul - I don't know I don't listen to that kind of music
Noncha Allt - What do you think about the other punkbands from England?
Paul - Half of them a shit but there are a few good ones like Glen Matlock's Rich Kids
Noncha Allt - Have you heared the romour that Glen wrote all Sex Pistols songs and without him they can't do anything
Paul - I don't know as I don't play for the Pistols
Noncha Allt - Have you heard any new bands?
Paul - No, I don't go out much in London
Mick - If people like these new bands let them do it as long they have fun
Noncha Allt - What do you think of these American bands like The Heartbreakers and Wayne County?
Joe - I've seen them but I don't like them
Noncha Allt - What about the Ramones?
Joe - They are brilliant, Patti Smith Group as well

Various State Recordings
Sweden 1984

The Swedish radio broadcast the the gig the night after Stockholm ’84 and the producers worked really hard on presenting the new tunes but started up with London Calling. Unfortunately my tape was damaged.

Stockholm 81

The ones I recorded myself when we followed them around the whole fxxxing globe I sent to my parents so they were intact. We recorded two sources.

From what I can recall the SQ was superb but when we pressed our copy of Stockholm ’81 we used my source (It was named “När Djurgår’n fick flytta ut för The Clash” b t w) and Michael, a friend and fellow punter placed his tape recorder in front of the master board.

This alternate source was later used for “Stockholm’s Burning” and it sounds a bit better but this source has this guy who’s talking all the time between the tunes. My source has the idiot who screams “White riot!” behind me when Joe talks. I like mine better but everyone else prefer Michaels…

European State Radio Stations
Greek Radio 85

The Greek state radio recorded this show. (I contacted them a long time ago) but all European state archives are closed for people outside; we can’t buy or hire.

Swedish Radio

When I asked an old Clashist friend and journalist on SR ( Swedish Radio ) what had to be done to get all those shows ( Malmö, Lund, Örebro ’77, Eriksdal ’80, Stockholm and Gothenburgh ’81 and ’84, they have them all – complete with perfect sound!)

I got the answer that if a show is asked for by more than 1000 people they’ll put it on the list for P3 Live, a live show every night at 21.00. (Have a look att www.sr.se and go to P3 Live and see the program and old shows.) Unfortunately it’s only 1 hour and therefore edited.

Clash Interviewed by
Annette Weatherman and Vermilion Sands
A lengthy interview with Joe, Mick & Paul in 1977. It was published in Search & Destroy mag out of San Francisco. It was the first word of the Clash in print in the U.S. Birmingham Rag Marktt & Sweden gigs referenced.

June 14 Grona Lund, Stockholm
July 17 Birmingham Rag Market (Punk Festival)
The band show up to the aborted punk festival announced 3 weeks earlier. The council managed within a couple of days to shut it down. The Clash talked to local fans but the police turned up to make arrests for unlawful gathering and obstruction.
July 17 Birmingham Barbarellas
Following the afternoons debacle, the band managed to borrow heavy metal band Warhead's gear and play a 45 minute set in front of 500 punks. Johnny Green (A Riot of Our Own) mentions the Clash in 78 being outside a Birmingham venue explaining to ticket holders why they were unable to play.

There is a small interview reference in Search and Destroy [1977] fanzine titled Clash Landing where the Clash are interviewed by Annette Weatherman and Vermilion Sands.
