A Little
History About This Fun
Instrument
|
|
We've
all heard about a famous bluesman or country
singer that started his career on a simple
homemade cigar box guitar. With a list of
artists including Jimi Hendrix, Roy Clark and
Carl Perkins, the cigar box guitar has been
the precursor to many great careers and
countless inspiring stories. It's a wonder
that nobody has documented its magnificent
history until now.
According
to Dr. Tony Hyman, curator of the National
Cigar Museum
(http://www.cigarnexus.com/nationalcigarmuseum/),
cigar boxes as we know them didn't exist
prior to the 1840's. Prior to then,
cigars were shipped in larger crates
containing 100 more per case.
But
after 1840, cigar manufacturers started using
smaller, more portable boxes with 20-50
cigars per box. Cigars were extremely
popular in the 19th Century, and therefore,
many empty cigar boxes would be laying around
the house!
The 1800's were also a simpler time for
Americans, when necessity was truly the
mother of invention. Using a cigar box
to create a guitar, fiddle or a banjo was an
obvious choice for a few crafty souls.
The
earliest proof of a cigar box instrument we
have found is an etching of two Civil War
Soldiers at a campsite with one playing a
cigar box fiddle.
This was created by French artist, Edwin
Forbes, who worked as an official artist for
the Union Army.
The cigar box fiddle appears to sport an
advanced viola-length neck attached to a
"Figaro" cigar box. The etching is
copyrighted 1876. In addition to the etching,
plans for a cigar box banjo were published in
the 1870's by Boy Scout's founder, Daniel
Carter Beard in St. Nicholas
Magazine. The plans, entitled "How to
Build an Uncle Enos Banjo" [diagrams
pictured above] showed a step-by-step
description for a playable 5-string fretless
banjo made from a cigar box. The plans were
eventually published in Beard's immensely
popular American Boy's Handy Book.
By the 20th Century, times were still lean
for many Americans and cigars gained even
more popularity.
The
"television of the day" was the trusty Sears
and Roebuck Catalog that allowed families to
dream of items they'd love to own. It
also provided a catalyst for more homemade
creations. In her magnificent book
Fiddle Fever, writer Sharon Arms Doucet
describes Felix LeBlanc, a young Cajun boy
who makes
a cigar box fiddle after studying violin
pictures in the Sears Catalog. The
story, based on the life of Cajun fiddler
Canray Fontenot, details the entire building
process. "Canray said that he really
wanted a fiddle when he was a little boy,"
Doucet told us, "and an uncle or somebody
told him to use a cigar box. It was
somewhat 'common knowledge' for them to build
instruments like this," she said.
Fontenot and the fictional Felix both used a
tree branch as a bow, pine tar as resin and
screen wire as strings (although Felix
eventually replaced the
screen wire with old strings from his uncle's
fiddle.)
The
cigar box guitar has such an awesome
pedigree. Blind Willie Johnson made a
one-string when he was five and learned how
to play
melodies up and down that lonely string.
Later, he would record the monumental Dark
Was The Night (Cold Was The Ground) on
standard guitar. The song is a instrumental
classic that has droning chords laying the
background for a haunting melody played up
and down on the high E string...a technique
he learned on his original one-string.
Not only does the cigar box guitar have a
great history, these little suckers are so
much fun to play. Each one has it's own
unique sound.
Mine
are played with a slide and have a great
whining blues sound...one that just cannot be
emulated from another guitar. They're small,
portable and almost indestructable. And let's
face it...they're weird looking and attract
major attention.

Hand
Made Cigar Box Guitar Cases
by Jonathan
Teague
Hand made out of discarded
lumber, old oil paintings, panelling and anything else
I can find. Generally speaking these are usually
designed to fit a specific model of one of my CBGs
however some cases are adjustable for any CBG.
Each case is diffferent, some use a hinge and real
handle, some use a wrapped wire for a handle, some
have different materials on the inside than others.
Keep in mind that it takes several hours to procure
the materials and make the case and each is one of a
kind. They are about the size of a shotgun
case.
For the ULTIMATE cigar box
guitar setup, why not put the amp INSIDE the Case?
See example of a Sear
Silvertone amp inside a guitar case below. These are
the same amall amps that I sell, I just put the guts

I am now
shipping Bluesboy JAG CBG's with my own hand wound
pickups.
Made
exclusively for Bluesboy JAG Electric Cigar Box
Guitars for "Superior Tone".
These puppies
are completely
hand
wound which
means several hours of painstaking detailed work. Many
people who
make thier own pickups use machines and they guide the
wire and patiently monitor the process just in case it
goes haywire.
I actually WIND MY OWN BY HAND! It takes a lot of
patience and skill and a lot of trial and error to get
it right, but some of us think it is worth it.
Machine wound
pickups are set into an automated machine that guides
and lays the wire. While these pickups may sound just
fine to the untrained ear, he result is a somewhat
uneven tone. My pickups have a much better tone for
cigar box guitars, they add more mid range, giving the
CBG a more even sound. CBG's are known to have a very
treble tone, my pickups compensate for that.
In addition to
that, many of my CBG's with my pickups installed have
an excellent ZZTOP or Black Keys type of
humbucker tone (my pickups are not technically
humbuckers but that's another discussion) which sounds
absolutely INCREDIBLE
with a little tube distortion and a glass slide.

Each pickup is
hand prepared and coated for protection. I use very
strong Alnico V andneodymium magnets that are the
industry choice for electric guitar pickups, not cheap
hobby shop magnets.
These pickups
use industry standard copper wire and several thousand
winds per bobbinfor that extra HOT tone, just what
Bluesboy JAG CBG's demand. Warm, full tones for mellow
guitar passages and STINGING 50's style hot overdrive
for when you REALLY wanna knock 'em
dead!
You can also
purchase the pickups separately for $39.99 each plus
$5 shipping. They will arrive complete with leads ready
to be soldered into a guitar jack or volume
knob.

I
love my three string cigar box
guitar. But it's dangerous to
have around. Whenever I grab
it, I can't put it down. It's
seriously addictive. Though
intimidated at first by the lack of
frets, I've found it to be very easy to
play. It's well constructed and
the electronics work fine. And
the best thing about it of course, is
that all the groupies go crazy over
my new natural sounding
groove.

I
just received my first cigar box guitar
by Jag, and I simply couldn't be
happier with it! This little instrument
is a whole lot of fun, and EASY to
play. I've owned a bunch of musical
instruments over the past 30 years, but
dollar for dollar this has got to be
THE best bargain I've ever had! Jag is
a true craftsman!
I
know that he plays it with a slide, but
for myself, I've found that the neck is
so silky smooth that I like to "fret"
the strings and slide up and down the
fingerboard that way.
Overdrive
it a bit, through a little tube amp,
(or in my case a solid state amp with a
tube emulator pedal), and you've got
the makings for some geniuine, heart
grindin', foot stompin', po' boy,
street corner blues. For a different
sound I'm thinkin' about getting
another one fretted . . . string it up
lighter, and try it with a drone string
(like a mountain dulcimer.) I think
that would be the cat's ass,
too!
I
can't wait to incorporate this into my
band's "MucklandMusic"
sound!

I received my CBG
yesterday and played it forseveral hours. I
thoroughly enjoyed the uniqueness of the
instrument and expect I will log many, many
hours playing it. I tried it in open A, open G
and G5. Open A seems to be optimal with the
strings it came with.
I would like to
compliment you on your craftsmanship (my wife
sends her compliments aswell). I played the
instrument through my Ampeg Jet tube amp,
straight into the amp and also through a Korg
ToneWorks processor, with excellent results. I
also played it through my Fender Acoustasonic
amp which produced very appealing tones and
really brought out and enhanced the acoustic
properties of the instrument. Thanks for being
out there and also for your prompt service. I
really appreciate what you're
doing!

Jag- I just had to let you know how your
instrument was recieved. I
thought my husband would have to learn how to
play it for awhile, but
no,instead he tuned it, plugged it in and
started playing it like he had
it his whole life! He's in love with it. He
said, "finally that blues
sound I've been looking for!". He even called me
today from his day
job where he works with kids in a juvinile
detentention center and he
brought his CBG and everyone was amazed, one of
the correctional officers
happened to have a harmonica with him and they
started playing and
pretty soon had a crowd. Tomorrow he's
performing at a big festival and has
already come up with a couple of songs he's
going to play. I'm going
to take a picture of him playing there and email
it to you. I want to thank
you again for making it so fast, shipping it so
soon, and making it soundso good.

I gave the
"black punch" acoustic (no pickup!) cbg to my
boyfriend for his
50th and he won't stop playing it! And I mean
not for a second.
By the way, it's plenty loud enough for his
show.
He's also
going to write
you to thank you for building such a beautiful
instrument.
Thanks for all of your help and advice. You
really delivered for me.
He used it
for busking on the waterfront of Old Town
Alexandria, VA
yesterday and the guitar caused quite a stir.
People just stared. And
with no mic. I gave him some other things for
his b-day, but I only needed to give him the
cbg!
He really
is entranced.
Debbie
Big thanks
to Bluesboy Jag for making a CBG for my
girlfriend to give
me for my birthday! I am an acoustic one man
band in the Delta style
and have known about your guitars and excellent
playing for a while.
I play clubs and school shows and all Summer for
the last 10 years or
so I've played in Old Town Alexandria outside on
the waterfront
busking. I wasn't sure if the CBG would be loud
enough acoustic for
my outdoor show since I play National Steel
Tri-cone usually. I have
been amazed at how great it comes across while
busking. I walk right
up to the crowd so everybody can see the tooth
pick frets and it is a
big hit. I use a heavy percussive style with
finger and thumb picks
and the thing really carries! I tell people that
JAG is the
Stradivari of CBGs.

About
Me
|
|
I've been
playing guitar for almost 30 years and recording
for almost as long. I've been a guitar teacher for
25 years, specializing in beginners and fingerstyle
acoustic blues. I started playing in a cover band
in Little Rock while still in high school. Opened
up my own recording studio in 1984 (still in
business) and recorded about 40 90 minute cassettes
of my own music over the next 20+ years. Got into
blues after discovering Robert Johnson and RL
Burnside. I've recorded over 20 full length CD's in
the past 4 years including acoustic blues, electric
blues, piano blues, ambient electronic and
experimental electronic. I play regularly at local
bars and coffehouses, playing my cigar box guitar
and 6 string Simon and Patrick acoustic. I've made
over 300 CBG's of various types.s

K.I.S.S - keep it

|
|
Toothpick Frets?? Don't
they wear down fast?
|
My toothpick frets have
a heavy coating of polyurethane on the neck to
protect them and for tonal purposes. I've been
playing mny favorite CBG with these frets all over
the south for almost 2 years with no visible signs
of wear.
|
|
Tell me about piezo vs
your own pickups.
|
Some cbgs on the market
have piezo tansducer pickups. The piezo's pick up
the vibrations from the neck which is a cheap but
definiately not the best sounding solution.
Some of the drawbacks
of the transducer pickup sare feedback, uneven
tone, especially at loud volumes, very little
sustain and 'tinny' sound.
The Bluesboy JAG hand
made pickups are magnetic - they pick up the
vibrations of the strings like a traditional
electric guitar. The hand wound pickups sound MUCH
better and cost $50 more as they take several hours
to hand wind. The pickups are single coil, similar
to a Stratocaster pickup.

|
|
They look so
small....?
|
The neck is the same
length as a regular guitar neck. Most cigar boxes
are smaller than a traditional guitar body, this
allows up to 26 frets on some
models.
|
|
Why 3 or 4
strings?
|
That's all you need, on
an open tuned 6 string guitar, 3 strings are
duplicated anyway :) Yes I could make a 5 or 6
stringer with a fancy pickup, volume knob and frets
but why? You'd have to pay a LOT more than I charge
and it would sound like a generic guitar anyway.
You might as well buy a 'real guitar' at Guitar
Center. These pups are designed to be low cost,
home made and LOOK home made, that's the idea.
Take a look at what you
can do with just three
strings.
These kotos are EXACTLY the same as my ftretless
three stringers btu they are using nylon strings
instead of steel.
Plus, when you play a 3
or 4 stringer, you REALLY get attention at gigs
:)
|
|
How is it
tuned?
|
However you like! I
normally use the 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings on a
4 string, and 5, 4, 3 on a 3 string. It's tuned
ROOT-5th-octave root or A-E-a for and A chord. On a
4 string it's A-E-a-c#. You can also tune it to G
or D if you like. Yes I can play all my 6 string
guitar songs on a 3 string and even a 2
string.
|
|
Is this for
kids?
|
If you're asking if
this is a toy, the answer is no :) It's a
professionally built and pro sounding guitar that
people use live
on
stage.
See
one of my customers play my CBG at a
gig.
I've personally played
my CBG at hundreds of shows over the years and it's
never let me down!
|
|
Can you make me one of
those (fill in the blank) style CBG's like you have
on your web page?
|
The specialty tins and
fancy artwork boxes are one of a kind thrift store
finds so probably not. The store bought boxes are a
dime a dozen so yes, I can probably find a cigar
box like one on my site.
|
|
Is there any TAB or
tuning charts for these pups?
|
No and no, none are
needed. Just tune it as you like as noted above and
learn to play your songs by ear, it's easy to play
a traditional country, blues, pop or bluegrass song
on a 3 or 4 string cbg. Single note playing of
melodies is quite simple with the 'clawhammer'
style of picking shown in my video
instruction
CD included
with every order.
|
|
How many have you
made?
|
500 as of 3/08. I'm now
in my third year of making cbg's.
|
|
Do you make
basses?
|
Yup, $199.99 due to the
extra expense for the bass strings.. I use the 3rd
and 4th strings of a bass and the 5th and 6th
strings of a guitar because the huge bass tuning
heads won't fit on my necks and regular bass
strings are too big for the neck.
|
|
What other instruments do you make?
|
Thought you'd never ask. Cookie tin banjos,
cigar box ukuleles, diddly bows. Go to my 'order
now' page to pick your banjo tin or uke
box. I also make the Boogie
Board Foot Stomper.
|
|
Why are your prices so
low?
|
I'm just trying to make
a little extra dough to pay for gas and maybe take
in a flick every now and then, not open a
mega-corporation with thousands of employees with
stock options. It's all about the
MUSIC.
|
|
What if I want you to
make one out of MY box?
|
Some boxes don't work
so well, the best thing to do is to email me
closeup pics of the sides of the box and the
dimensions and I'll get back to you.
|
|
Do You ship outside of the US?
|
You bet! I've shipped all over the world
including BahamasFrance, Brazil, Belgium, Canada,
Chile, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iraq,
Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia,
Sweden, UK, etc.

Small and Medium Amps
Are $69.99
Large Amps Are
$99.99
All amps are 7 watts
and run off a 9 volt battery. They are plenty loud
enough for livingroom jamming. Depending on the
components I have available, some have external
speaker outputs so you can plug them into the PA or
a larger amp and can run off AC power. I use this
setup live and can get a GREAT tone thru my 100
Watt Music Man amp. Please specify if this is the
type of amp you would like.
1930's
Trutone D1035 Tube Radio Amp
This is an original
Vintage radio in non working condition. It sitll
has the original frequency dial! The speaker is 5
inches and the amp will be 7 watts. The model is
Truetone D1035. What a cool vintage addition to
your cigar box guitar this is! You
can buy a service manual on this page and actually
repair the radio.
I don't know anything about radio repairs so please
don't ask ;) This
is a similar radio in perfect
condition.

Electric
Boogie Board Foot Drum

Pickup
inside, just plug a regular guitar cord into
it!
Plug it
into your bass or guitar amp and just stomp
on it!
Just like
the old days but
ELECTRIFIED!
Great for
acoustic or electric acts, even full
bands!
Great for
busking, one man bands
No
batteries required
Get a
great bass drum or snare like sound depending
on where you stomp!
Angled for
sittng or standing.
Painted
jet black and covered with several coats of
polyurethane.
Excellent
for recording:
I use it
to record guitar and drums at the same time -
live, no need for a drum machine or samples.
This also allows you to vary the tempo and
record live, then add more tracks later
without having to re-record the drums which
is EXTREMELY difficult to do after one
percussion track is recorded.
I often
record several guitar/boogie board tracks in
one night, then go back and add bass, vocals,
lead, etc... later.

Playing my Boogie
Board with my Cigar
Box Guitar
in my
pajamas.
Please note, your
Boogie Board doesn't have a band logo on it,
but ask me and maybe I can add one for a bit
extra.
