St. Thomas originally by Sonny Rollins transcribed by Adam Hart acousticjambreak@hotmail.com This is an old jazz standards song which cheese has adapted. To me it sounds very light and tropical and happy like I should be applying coco butter and dragging my boogie board past the palm trees, down to the surf. I think the timing might be a half step off in one or two places. Find a recording and check it out. Order of song: Main theme Jamming over chords of main theme Bridge Jamming over chords of main theme Main Theme + main theme ending #2 Main Theme The main theme has two variations on its ending. Both can be played in unison. The Jam follows the same pattern as the main theme, i.e. you could still play the main theme melody over it, except they do a bunch of switch off soloing (Hollingsworth and Kang) over this strumming part. Cool transition Jam bridge part consists of jamming on these four chords: Repeat as desired. E A Cm B Here's the timing: E A 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & Cm B 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & I like to play the chords like this: E: 0 0 A: 0 Cm: 0 B: 0 0 or 0 0 0 0 9 1 6 9 8 9 2 7 11 9 7 2 X X X 0 0 5 9 7 I strum in 16th notes and let the bottom two strings (high E and B) ring. Nershi is pretty much burning it up on a solo during this whole part so he never actually plays these exact chords, but this will get the job done. Then it's back to the main theme where they mess around with some Afro-Cubalicious drum fills courtesy of Mike Travis, BUT they still keep the same chord progression going, they just stop playing when he fills, and jump right back in step of the progression. Here is how Cheese ends it out of the main theme jam (pretty much the same stuff from above). Ending (the main theme + 'main theme ending #1' from above 3 times at the end): C Am G C 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & E---------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------- G------5-4-------------------5--4--5----------------------- D----5-----7--5--7--2--3--5-------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- C Am G C 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & E---------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------- G------5-4-------------------5--4--5----------------------- D----5-----7--5--7--2--3--5-------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- C Amaj7 Dm G 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & E---------------------------------------------------------- B-5-----6-----7-----------6-----5-------------------------- G------------------------------------7--------------------- D---------------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- C F G C B* C <--see chord explanation* 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & E---------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------- G-9-----7-----5--------------5--4--5----------------------- D-------------------7-----5-------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- C F G C B* C 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & E---------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------- G-9-----7-----5--------------5--4--5----------------------- D-------------------7-----5-------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- C F G C B* C 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 E---------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------- G-9-----7-----5--------------5--4-----------------5-------- D-------------------7-----5-------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------------- Chord Explanation for B* (I don't know the name for this chord) B*: 0 1 0 0 2 X
