Chess Sites of the World
I am collecting a list of all the public chess sites
in the world.
Streets, Parks, Beaches, Bookstores and Cafe's
If you know of any not listed below or can correct or refine
my information please drop me a line at billtomlinson@mac.com
I could use a lot of information here. It will get better as
I get more information. I could use your help.
These places should be hassle free, no notice required, drop
in places. If they are not that way, please let me know .
The first list here is a list of unorganized places where chess
just happens. I call them 'hangouts'. In general, they do not
happen on the grounds of a formal chess club. However, many players
have sent me chess club meeting places. Although it's not alway
easy to draw a line between the two, I try.
Last updated Feb 12th, 2009
The Chess Clubs are listed after the
Hangout list.

- Portland: Marino Duregon writes "Coffee Time , a cafe'
where you find blitz chess players every night http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8463123/
My current favorite place to play chess is "Coffee Time"
710 NW 21st. The atmosphere is nice and in the summer the chess
players seem to come out of the woodwork to hang out there. Thurday,
Friday and Saturday evenings seem to be the most chess populated
times. Sometimes you find up to 8 different games going on. Some
of the better players around town have started frequenting the
place, but there still seems to be plenty of mediocre players
who enjoy a casual game. If you want to play, but don't know
anybody, ask the baristas. They can frequently point out other
chess players who are hanging around. There are some sets available
on site, (along with Jenga and scrabble) if you didn't want to
look like a geek by carrying yours with you. You can usually
just put out a set and someone will eventually come by, wanting
to play. Probably the nicest thing about Coffee time is that
there's usually an interesting mix of people hanging out there,
and of course, you can get some good coffee too."
- Portland: Marino Duregon writes "Pioneer Courthouse
Square http://www.pioneersquare.citysearch.com/1.html
In Pioneer courthouse square there's a fountain, sculpture, a
weather machine that predicts tomorrow's weather at noon but
is worth looking at even if it's not noon. Plus some faux broken
pillars with chess boards on the top which usually have a crowd
watching others play chess."
- Portland Bruce Peterson writes "If you're in Portland
on a Thursday night and want to play chess, sign up for the Portland
chess club's Thursday night blitz tournament. You get to play
evernybody twice (once as black, once as white) and there are
usually 2 or 3 masters there. I generally hang out there Thursdays.
They have other stuff during the day as well, check out thier
web site: http://www.aboutchess.org
Thanks for such a great site!"

Bulgaria, I seem to recollect seeing a massive chess-board laid
out on the side-walk of the promenade of the Black Sea, at a
holiday resort, and this is where my memory is to be really stretched.
As far as I can recall, the place was called ZLETSKI
PIASSCU, spelling not absolutely certain to be accurate.
Two elderly gentlemen were playing, on raised seats either side
of the 'pitch' and youths from the largish crowd, actually man-handled
the pieces according to instructions, and what I do recall most
definitely is the concerted buzz of appreciation, not applause,
that came from the crowd, but strangely, a few seconds after
the completion of the move as if the obviously knowledgeable
spectators had jointly realised the strategy behind the move.
Moves were very infrequent as each move was planned so very carefully
and there was no evidence of any timing devices. I never saw
the end of a game, I moved further down beach side walk as it
was raining at the time, a warm shower that didn't deter either
players or onlookers."

it's coming, it always does. On warm days there is sometimes
30 or 40 people watching and playing. Human comedy at its finest.
Denmark:

Paris is a wonderful chess shop with lots of books, and chess
sets. The owner speaks English quite well, and will give you
a list of all the chess clubs in Paris. The list includes and
addresses and phone numbers. Unfortunately I didn't discover
the store until late in my trip so I didn't get to go to any
of the clubs on the list. When you're traveling with a non-chess
playing husband, and you have limited time left in a city, chess
club tours take a backseat to museums, and churches.

late, at about 9:30-10 PM. Nice atmosphere and quite close to
one of Berlin's best chess stores, whose name and location, however,
I've forgotten. Oh, yes, almost forgot! Food and coffee are quite
good also. I was able to avoid most of the museums, galleries,
and whatever tourists do in Berlin, as late night chess made
it impossible to wake up in the morning."

nice thought that when one is thinking: "hey, I wish I had
a list of chess-cafes around the world, that would be nice...
Then I could go and visit some of them," and, hey again,
there it is! In the place where I live luckily there is one very
cosy chess hangout. It's the Cafe Van den Brink (pronounced somewhat
like "vaughan-dan-brink") and its located at Nieuwstad
66 (do not try to pronounce that..!) in Arnhem in The Netherlands.
Or Holland, as it is called in your list. Most evenings, there
are a handful of people playing chess. Closed on Sundays, much
to my regret. The atmosphere is relaxed, laid-back and open-minded.
It's the sort of place where you can talk to one another, about
any subject, conceivable or inconceivable, with quiet music in
the background and some nice beer, or coffee, in front of you.
Smoking is not so much allowed as it is obliged. Newspapers available,
only in Dutch, unfortunately. The cafe also offers a very lively

available for the asking at the bar. The place is a bit seedy,
but it is a hangout for a number of GMs and IMs. In fact there
have been tournaments there with about a dozen GMs playing (Icelanders,
Englishmen, Slavs, Hungarians etc.). If you want to play, there
is always someone there who is willing to take you on. The only
problem with this place is that the chess there is crushingly
strong for patzers (like myself). This pub also sponsors a chess
team that plays in the Icelandic chess club competition under
the same name as the pub, or 'Grandrokk'."

if it requires a membership. I do sometimes list sites with one
time charges. At this time I have started putting in links. I
also put in e-mail addresses if you need more site information
so that people. This policy may change. I cannot be very sure
that these events are still happening since they are not natural,
but instead are sponsored events.
