Key Terms lectures 7 - 12

Floor of Mouth - structure that is continous with the lining of the tongue and is ful of salivary glands.  Consists of 10% of all oral cavity cancers

Hard Palate - is the are of the top of the mouth that is formed by the vomer.  Most tumors that form here are of minor salivary gland origing (adenocarcinomas)

otalgia - pain the ear

fetor oris - bad breath

dyspnea - difficulty breathing

dysphagia - difficulty swallowing

Oropharynx - middle section of the pharynx that is located between C3 and C6 that is both digestive and respitory in function.  Consists of the base of the tongue, tonsils, soft palate and oropharyngeal walls.

Waldyers Ring - ring of lymphoid tissue that is formed by the lingual tonsils, palatine tonsils, and the nasopharyngeal tonsils

Nasopharynx - is the cuboidal structure that lies directly below the nasal cavity and right above the soft palate.  Only head and neck cancer that is not directly related to smoking or drinking.

Cranial nerve 2 - optic nerve

Cranial nerve 3 - occulomotor nerve

cranial nerve 6 -  abducens nerve

Rouvier's Node - also known as the retropharyngeal node and is always included as part of the minimum target volume for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Jugulodiagstric Node - recieves most of the lymph drainage from the headf and neck region and is usually always treated

diplopia - double vision

esrthesioneuroblastoma - most common pediatric cancer of the olfactory nerve which is often mistaken as nasal cavity cancer

Maxillary Antrum - most common site of cancer of the paranasal sinus (posteriorly extends to the optic nerve and makes up the superior part of the orbit)

Hypopharynx - is the part of the esophagus that immediatly surrounds the larynx.  The front wall of the hypopharynx is actually the back wall for the larynx (voice box)

Pyriform Sinus - most common site of cancer of the hypopharynx

Larynx - extends from the tip of the epiglottis (lower border of C3) to the lower border of the cricoid cartilage (C6).  It is subdivided into 3 sites : the glottis, supraglottis and subglottis.  Makes up 2% of all cancers and is second in frequenct to lip for all head and neck cances.

hoarsness - most common symptom for glottic cancers

sore throat - most common symptom for cancers of the supraglottis

true cord - also know as the vocal cords (containted in the glottis)

false cords - close when we swallow, provide protection against plueral aspiration.

Anterior Commisure of  the true cord - most common site of glottic cancers

Adams Apple - made up of the thyroid cartilage

Salivary Glands - broken up into 2 groups, the major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular , and sublingual) and the minor salivary glands.  They are mostly mucoepidermoid and adenoid cystic in histology.

Parotid - largest of the 3 major salivary glands and the most common site for cancer of the parotid (80%)
