Thyroid Ophthalmalgia (pain in the eye) : pain in the eye (the eye is bulging forward) due to a hyperactive thyroid which causes the pad’s behind the eye to swell.
Pterygia : An abnormal mass of tissue arising from the conjunctiva of the inner corner of the eye that obstructs vision by growing over the cornea. It is treated with Strontium 90 untop of the eye.
Gynocomastia : abnormal enlargement in the breasts in males usually cause by the hormone treatments given to prostate patients. Is treated with radiation prophylactically around the nipple.
Head and Neck cancer : any cancer that falls below oncrines line and above the clavical
Patients receiving radiation to the head and Neck area need to maintain their body weight during treatments
Thrush (fungal infection / moniliasis candidiasis albicans) – white lumps in the mouth
The Neck is often irradiated prophylactically to prevent nodal involvment / maximum dose allowed is 50 Gy
Oral Cavity – consists of the hard palate, anterior 2/3rds of the tongue, gingival, floor of the mouth, teeth, lips, salivary glands, buccal mucosa
Oral Cavity Cancers – consist of 30% of all head and neck cancers and 95% of oral cavity cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.
luekoplacia – whitish patches in the mouth
erythroplasia – velvety red patches in the mouth
exophytic type – type of oral cavity cancer that grows out superficially (later metastasis than other types)
infiltrative type – type of oral cavity cancer with deep extension into underlying tissue
ulcerative type – most common form of oral cavity cancer with rapid infiltration
obicularis oris – completely circular muscle
commisure of the mouth – usually a very aggressive cancer
obicularis oris – a muscle made up of several layers of fibers passing in different directions that encircles the mouth and controls most movements of the lips
vermillion border –border of the lip and the skin of the face
commissure of mouth - outer edges of the mouth
