Metastasis
– sedcondary growth, related in cell type to the primary tumor,
near or far, with normal tissue intervening.
Seeding
– mechanical transference of cells from one tumor site to another
Tumor
spill – is when cancer cells break off of the tumor. Occurs
during surgery.
Staging
– a method of describing extent of disease. A means of defining
the tumor size and extension at the time of diagnosis. Tumor
staging provides a means of communication about tumors, helps in
determining the best treatment aids in predicting prognosis, and
provides a means for continuing research.
Initial
biopsy - The removal and examination
of a sample of tissue from a living body for diagnostic purposes.
Clinical
staging – staging that is performed by the use of non-invasive diagnostic
tests to tell extent of disease
Pathological
staging – staging that is performed by the use of invasive procedures
and is based on a biopsy to tell the extent of disease
AJCCS
– American Joint Commision on Cancer Staging, they propose
and modify staging systems
Histological
type – names the cancer and tells what type of cancer that it is
Histological
grade – tells how far removed from normal the cancer cells appear
and what percent of cells in the tumor are cancer cells.
Tells about the aggressiveness of a tumor.
Carcinoma
– A malignant new growth that
arises from epithelium , found in skin or, more commonly, the lining
of body organs , for example: breast ,prostate ,lung ,stomach or
bowel. Carcinoma’s also can arise from functional cells of
an organ. They have a tendancy to spread through the lymphatic
system
Sarcoma
- A form of cancer that arises in the supportive tissues such as
bone, cartilage, fat or muscle.
Gliomas
– a tumor originating in the neuralgia of the brain or the spinal
cord. They can be benign or malignant. (subtype of sarcoma)
Adenoma
– a benign epithelial tumor having glandular origin and structure
Melanoma
- is a malignant tumor of the melanoma. A tumor arising from
the melanocytic system of the skin and other organs. When used alone
the term refers to malignant melanoma.
Lymphoma
– (lymphosarcoma) Any of various malignant tumors that arise in
the lymph nodes or in other lymphoid tissue
Luekemia
- Any of various acute or chronic neoplastic diseases of the bone
marrow in which unrestrained proliferation of white blood cells
occurs, usually accompanied by anemia, impaired blood clotting,
and enlargement of the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Simply
put cancer of the WBC’s.
Myeloma
- A malignant tumor formed by the cells of the bone marrow
Rhabdomayo
– striated muscle
Leomayo
– smooth muscle
Myo
– muscle
Osteo
- bone
