A COURSE SYLLABUS and CONTRACT for ENGLISH 1A

• A standard paperback college level dictionary such as:

The American Heritage Dictionary Based on the New Second College Edition
or
The New American Webster: Handy College Dictionary, Revised and Expanded
or
Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language
or
An electronic college level dictionary such as:
The American Heritage Dictionary by Seiko Instruments which includes a spell checker, an advanced phonetic word search, and Roget's II New Thesaurus which offers synonyms.

 

• Those students who need additional help in spelling may require a supplemental poor spellers dictionary such as:

The Random House Bad Speller's Dictionary.
or
Webster's New World Mi(s)spellers Dictionary: 15,000 Common Misspellings and Their Correct Spellings.
or
An electronic variant such as:
The Franklin Spelling Ace which checks and corrects over 80,000 words.

 and

• A dictionary of synonyms and antonyms such as:

PURPOSE:

The student will analyze prose critically.

The student will begin to develop a personal style by exploring the use of rhetorical devices employed by selective authors.

The student will demonstrate the ability to communicate with well-organized coherent and effective compositions on an argumentative or expository subject limited enough to be covered within a prescribed time or space.

The student will organize and appropriately prepare a multiple source paper with appropriate documentation.

ATTENDANCE:

A student is allowed only the number of absences that a class meets in one week, i.e. five 1-hour absences for the day course that meets five times a week during a regular 12 week quarter or 2 class sessions for a 6 week summer course.

A student is asked to anticipate absences and to arrange make-up sessions on pre-announced assignments before returning to class.

Regular punctual attendance, diligent participation, and courteous behavior are expected of all students.

I will drop from the class any student who is excessively absent or who neglects classwork.

STUDENTS' MATERIALS:

Students must have paper, a pen, two different colored highlighters, and all textbooks for each class.

ASSIGNED PAPERS:

Use 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper for all assignments.

Written work submitted for a grade will be typed on the computer using a size 14 font, justified text, and double spacing.

Submit papers unfolded with your name, the course title, the instructor's name, and the date in the upper right-hand corner of page one.

Staple multiple page papers in the upper left-hand corner.

Proofread all papers with care.

Minor corrections may be made with a pen on final copies.

Illegible work will not be accepted.

Give every paper a title unless otherwise directed.

PAPERS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THESE SPECIFICATIONS WILL BE RETURNED UNREAD AND UNGRADED.

PENALTIES:

All papers are due on the assigned date.

Make-up work is accepted without penalty only in cases of illness or other serious causes to be judged by the instructor.

Work not submitted will receive a grade of F.

There are no make-up examinations.

Work done for other courses is not acceptable for credit in English 1A.

All work must be your own.

The instructor will fail any paper which violates these rules.

The burden of proof of authorship rests with the student.

GRADING:

Your grade for this course will be determined on the following basis.

40%	Three assigned essays
10%	Comprehensive grammar, style, and documentation exam
not percentage weighted	Sample endnotes
not percentage weighted	Sample bibliography
30%	Multiple source paper with documented sources
20%	Final essay
100%	Total

PLAGIARISM:

Plagiarism is defined as follows: "to steal and use (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own."

Any part of a paper that shows any evidence of copying "word for word" from an outside source or from another student's paper is NOT acceptable and may result in an F on the paper and/or an F in the course at the discretion of the instructor.

INCOMPLETES:

Incomplete grades are given only at the instructor's discretion.

No incomplete grades will be given in this course.
