A COURSE SYLLABUS and CONTRACT for ENGLISH 100A
STUDENT'S COPY
BOOKS:
PURPOSE:
English 100A is designed to help the student to read, to discuss, to listen, to write, and to think.
Emphasis will be placed on the writing of effective sentences and paragraphs.
ATTENDANCE:
A student is allowed only the number of absences that a class meets in one week, i.e. five 1-hour absences for the day course that meets five times a week.
A student is asked to anticipate absences and to arrange make-up sessions on pre-announced assignments before returning to class.
Regular punctual attendance, diligent participation, and courteous behavior are expected of all students.
I will drop from the class any student who is excessively absent or who neglects classwork.
STUDENTS' MATERIALS:
Students must have paper, a pen, two different colored highlighters, and all textbooks for each class.
Students should keep all written work in a folder.
The folder will aid students and to chart improvements and to detect recurring problems in their writing.
Each student should have the folder available when consulting with the instructor or with a tutor.
ASSIGNED PAPERS:
Use 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper for all assignments.
Written work submitted for a grade will be typed on the computer using a size 14 font, justified text, and double spacing.
Submit papers unfolded with your name, the course title, the instructor's name, and the date in the upper right-hand corner of page one.
Staple multiple page papers in the upper left-hand corner.
Proofread all papers with care.
Minor corrections may be made with a pen on final copies.
Illegible work will not be accepted.
Give every paper a title unless otherwise directed.
PAPERS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THESE SPECIFICATIONS WILL BE RETURNED UNREAD AND UNGRADED.
GRADING:
Final grades will be determined on the basis of composition grades, quizzes, and exams.
A student must pass the Grammar Examination in order to receive Credit for the course.
A student who does not take the scheduled Final Examination will receive a No Credit grade for the course.
The Final Examination will be two hours long.
Attendance at the Final Examination is by invitation only.
An F on any part of the Final Examination will result in a No Credit grade for the course.
PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarism is defined as follows: "to steal and use (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own."
Any part of a paper that shows any evidence of copying "word for word" from an outside source or from another student's paper is NOT acceptable and may result in an F on the paper and/or an F in the course at the discretion of the instructor.
INCOMPLETES:
Incomplete grades are given only at the instructor's discretion.
No incomplete grades will be given in this course.
