A Clockwork OrangeI've been kind of under the weather recently
(stomach bug) so I watched my old VHS copy of Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange yesterday. Should be on
everyone's must-see list, it's certainly as brilliant and provocative as when it
first came out in '71. Found these contrasting pics of Malcolm McDowell, now 62,
on www.malcolmmcdowell.org.
An interesting coincidence I'd never noticed in the film before: during the scene before we first see the bodybuilder Julian, his screen presence is introduced by the sound of his heavy breathing as he lifts weights. The actor was David Prowse, who years later would play heavy-breather Darth Vader... By the way, unless you've read the 1962 book by Anthony Burgess, you may not know that the slang vocabulary of the young British hoodlums in A Clockwork Orange borrows and twists heavily from Russian: khorosho/horrorshow, golova/gulliver, etc. The book even has a glossary. ![]()
