Parents or People?

While eating breakfast with my wife and our six kids ages 4-14 one morning, I announced, "Your mother embarrassed me again last night at the Sunday school Christmas party." I was hoping to get a reaction. No such luck. No one even looked at me. These kids know their mother better than that--and they were tired--and they know I like to play. My wife is so used to this kind of playful banter that she didn't bother to look up from eating a bite of pancake. Undaunted, I continued with a slight smirk on my face, "Two cups of eggnog and the woman puts a lamp shade on her head and starts dancing around."

Emily, our 14 year old freshman, felt sorry for me--or decided to humor me--or maybe she just wants to drive the car two years from now. Whatever her motivation was, she threw me a bone. "Was mom the social butterfly again?" she asked seriously but with a slight smile on her face.

Encouraged, I explained, "As soon as people find out we have six kids, your mother has instant credibility with other mothers. Mothers surrounded her to ask her how she does it."

Emily, who can't fathom that anyone with kids could be fun in a party setting, asked--as only a teenager can ask-- "Were there only parents at the party or were there people there too?"

The teenager's worldview is an amazing thing. Everyone falls into one of two catagories: parents or people.
