Welcome to CHEM 233
CHEM 233 is the first organic laboratory. The course content is traditionally divided into two parts--technique and synthesis. Part I contains labs that teach basic techniques in organic chemistry such as infrared spectroscopy, thin-layer, column and gas chromatogarphy, extraction and recrystallization. Part II then employs these techniques in the second half of the course to perform relevant functional group transformations in organic chemistry. CHEM 233 is offered all semesters, including summer. The course description is copied below from the UIC course catalog; however, for a more detailed description of the course objectives, content and activities, visit the course syllabus page.

CHEM 233 Course Manual Now Available at
Bookstore.
There are two required texts for CHEM 233:
1. Gilbert, J.C.; Martin, S.F. Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Macroscale Approach, 4th ed.; Brooks/Cole: Pacific Grove, CA, 2006. ISBN: 0-495-01334-X.
2. Landrie, C. Organic Chemistry Laboratory I: Lab Manual & Course Materials, Kendall-Hunt: 2009. ISBN: 978-0-7575-6240-2.
The second text above was stocked in the bookstore on Monday, August 24, 2009. Since the manual was not available until now, the front material and Lab One have been photocopied for you and will be distributed on the first day of class. You may also download that packet here. You will be responsible, however, for purchasing the lab manual before you complete Lab Two.
