On May 5, 2004, the U.S. Helsinki Commission held a hearing in Washington, DC., in room 334 of the Cannon House Office building. The panel, chaired by the Hon. Chris Smith (R-NJ), focused on the Report of Justice Peter Cory, and in particular on the issue of alleged collusion between state security officials in the north of Ireland and Loyalist paramilitaries, with respect to the 1989 murder of Belfast lawyer, Patrick Finucane. Chairman Smith and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) both demanded that Tony Blair, UK Prime Minister, conduct a public inquiry into the killing, "with no more exceptions or excuses." Rep. Peter King (R-NY), another panel member, went still further. King warned that if the Finucane case isn't resolved, there would be "no chance" of any reconciliation in the north of Ireland.
