DIRECTIONS TO COCOA BEACH HOTELS1. From the Orlando International Airport, take the north exit toward Orlando and then turn right - East - on the Beachline (used to be Beeline) Expressway (also known as State Road 528). This is a four-lane toll road and you'll need $1.25 to get to KSC.
2. After about 25 miles, you'll come to a major fork in the road. An exit marked Kennedy Space Center/Titusville veers off to the left (State Road 407) while the Expressway continues to the right toward Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach. If you are going to Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach to check into a hotel, jump to step 13. If you need to pick up shuttle press credentials and plan to drive straight out to the CBS bureau, jump to step 16. If you are going straight to the CBS bureau and don't need to pick up a badge, continue to step 3.
3. Stay left and follow 407 until it dead ends into State Road 405. Turn right (East).
4. Follow this road past the old McDonnell Douglas cruise missile plant and the TICO airport. You'll cross over U.S. 1. Just after that, you'll see the Astronaut Hall of Fame on your right.
5. Just past the Hall of Fame, and also on the right, is NASA's pass and ID building. This is a small white building. If you need to pick up credentials between missions, stop here. This is NOT where you pick up shuttle mission credentials.
6. Once you've got your badge, where you go next is up to you. If you're going to the KSC/CBS bureau, follow the directions immediately below. If you're going to Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach to check into a hotel, jump to step 13.
7. Turn right out of the Pass and ID parking lot and continue East on 405. You'll cross the drawbridge and, after a few miles, you'll pass by the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center on your right. Just past the visitors center is a guard gate where you'll have to show your credentials and a photo ID.
8. Once past the guard gate, take the first possible exit. At the base of the ramp, turn left (north) on State Road 3.
9. Go under the overpass and continue North to the second streetlight. You'll now be very close to the huge Vehicle Assembly Building. Turn right, or East, on Saturn Causeway.
10. You'll cross a railroad track, go through one street light and you'll see a fire station on the right and a large building that's under construction. Just past that is the press site, also on the right. Turn in.
11. Just after turning into the press site, you can choose to go left toward a large parking lot or go up a hill where you can see several media buildings. Go up the hill!
12. Park behind the CBS building and come on in!
13. Stay right and continue east on the Beeline and cross the Banana River. Ignore the Cape Canaveral Air Station exit. Shortly after, the Beeline will turn 90 degrees from east to south and become highway A1A as you enter the town of Cape Canaveral. The Radisson "Resort at the Port" Hotel is a mile or so down A1A on the right, just across the street from a McDonald's.DIRECTIONS FROM ORLANDO TO SHUTTLE PASS-and-ID/CBS BUREAU
14. If you're going to the Inn at Cocoa Beach, just keep going south on A1A until you reach a major intersection with highway 520 (a major four-lane road). This road goes East one block to the ocean and West to Merritt Island. Turn left, or East, go one block and then turn right. The Inn at Cocoa Beach is a block or so South on the left.
15. If you're going to the Holiday Inn, Doubletree/Howard Johnson's or the Hilton in Cocoa Beach, just keep going south on A1A. They're all on the left within a few miles of the A1A/520 intersection.
16. Stay right aon the Beach Line Expressway. Follow it over Interstate 95 and keep on going east. The road will cross U.S. 1 and then the Indian River, taking you onto Merritt Island. Once over the river, the first exit is State Road 3. Take this exit and then turn left (north) on State Road 3.
17. Go north on State Road 3. You will go through two street lights and the road eventually will make a sweeping right hand turn. Continue until you come to a small pass-and-ID buidling by a mockup of a Redstone rocket on the right. Go in and pick up your space shuttle mission credential. You will need two forms of ID, one of which must have your picture on it. A drivers license and passport will do, or DL and voter registration card. But both must be government-issued ID.
18. With ID in hand, you can proceed on to the CBS bureau. From here, take a right and continue north on State Road 3. You will go through a traffic light and then see a guard gate on your left. Show the guard your mission badge and drivers license. If you have any problems here, call Bill's cell phone.
19. Once through the gate, continue north on SR-3. You will go under SR-405. Once past the overpass, continue North to the second streetlight. You'll now be very close to the huge Vehicle Assembly Building. Turn right, or east, on Saturn Causeway.
20. You'll cross a railroad track, go through one street light and you'll see a fire station on the right and a large building just past that. Just past the building is the press site, also on the right. Turn in.
21. Just after turning into the press site, you can choose to go left toward a large parking lot or go up a hill (if you have one of the few parking permits) where you can see several media buildings. Go up the hill and park behind the CBS building. If you don't have a parking permit, stay left and park in the main lot.
22. NOTE: If you arrive on shuttle launch day, the press site guard gate will be staffed. Otherwise, there is no guard.
