Obituary....Jan. 1941
Rufus Carwin (Corwin) Reid
Rufus Carwin (Corwin) Reid was born March 30, 1863 at Charleston, Lee County,
Iowa and died at his home in Concordia at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 19
days. He was the fourth son of Lafayette and Amanda Reid.
His early childhood was spent at his birthplace near Keokuk. He accompanied
his father, who was a huckster, over the old plank road to the Mississippi
river which was the principal source of transportation in those early days.
His first outside work was driving a spike team to assist in pulling the big
wagon loads of merchandise from the flat boats on the river up the banks to the
foot of Main Street in Keokuk. For this service, he received 75 cents a day.
Sixty-three years ago he came to Kansas with his parents in a covered wagon and
settled in the vicinity of Concordia. Here on April 8, 1882 he was married to
Ida May Fulmer, daughter of Marion and Susan Fulmer. To this union ten
children were born, one preceding him in death. This child, Ruby, died at the
age of four.
Mr. Reid was a retired stonemason, having constructed many of the buildings in
Clyde and Concordia. He was a faithful Odd Fellow and received a 25-year
button in this order several years ago. This button has been worn by him with
a great deal of pride and admiration for the fellowship it represents. He was
of Protestant faith although he did not favor any particular denomination.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mattie Montgomery of
McDonald, Mrs. Opal Begnoche of Aurora, and Mrs. Violet Ohlson of Kansas City,
Mo.; six sons, Reo of Chemult, Ore., Lowell of Spokane, Wash., Marion of Clyde,
Jeff of Des Moines and Don and Kermit Reid of Concordia. He also is survived
by one sister, Mrs. Ola Hakes of Ames, two brothers, William and Edwin Reid of
Concordia as well as seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held Jan. 2 at the Chaput Funeral Parlor with the Rev.
Hill of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in charge. Burial was in Pleasant Hill
Cemetary.
Rufus is buried along with his wife Ida May at Pleasant Hill Cemetary in
Concordia, Kansas.

During a trip to Clyde, Kansas with Don Reid, son of Rufus Carwin Reid and his
son, Caroll Reid in August, 1991, Don told Annette (Strange) Carroll that
not only did his father work helping to pull merchandise up from the river
boats in Keokuk, Iowa, he also led the horses that pulled the Canal Boats on
the Mississippi River. The horses were led along a path along side the River.

The streets in Clyde, Kansas are paved with brick set in sand and are still in
good condition. Rufus Carwin Reid, a stonemason not only did this work but
also supplied the stone blocks that were used in many buildings in Clyde and
other structures in Concordia, Kansas. His son, Don Reid, assisted him and
also himself built many structures as well as helping Rufus, his dad, set the
bricks in the Clyde streets. (Annette Carroll visited Clyde and Concordia with
Don and his son, Caroll Reid in August of 1991)
A cartoon drawn by Rufus' son, Jefferson (Jeff) Reid in the the Document
file along with Lafayette and Amanda Reid's documents.

Rufus' middle name "Carwin" has been shown as "Corwin" in some documents,
however, in conversation with Don Reid, the son of Rufus Carwin Reid, in August
of 1991, Don verified that the spelling according to his family tradition is
CARWIN.
Annette Carroll had decided that because the name is clearly spelled "Corwin"
in Hugh T. Reid's family Bible, this family history will use the Corwin
spelling.391
