| Notes for JOHN W. REID: Cemetary records, Fairview Cemetary, Osbourne Co., Kansas Obituary-Aug., 1929 (Reprint, Portis (Kan.) Independent) - DOC. #79 Obituary of John Reid: The following obituary is reprinted from the Portis Independent and concerns the life of John W. Reid, a brother of Mrs. Herbert Hakes and Mrs. O.M. Bulla of Ames. Mr. Reid was quite well known here through his frequent visits with relatives. Before scarcely anyone of the community knew last Thursday that our well known citizen, John Reid, was even ill, his death at five o'clock in the evening was announced and came as a storm from a clear sky. Some heart weakness was the immediate cause of death. While he had been afflicted with the disease in the past, yet it was not generally known that he was in other than the usual health. He had not been feeling the best lately, but was downtown that morning. Before noon he was taken ill, but his condition was not thought so serious until shortly before he died. While he had reached his three score and ten, yet it does not seem that it was time for him to leave his daily walks here among us. The demise of John Reid takes one of Portis' best known characters. He lived here almost 50 years and few men of the entire countryside were better known than he. For years he resided on a farm northeast of town, but of late years has lived in town. Reid always took an unusual interest in whatever he chose to do. Livestock used to be his hobby and lately he was interested in the sale of trees and shrubs. He was an enthusiastic radio fan and picked up much of the world news by the radio as well as through the daily papers. He was well versed in politics and current topics and did not fear to express his ideas or conditions as he saw them. The following account was read at the funeral service: John W. Reid, son of Lafayette and Amanda Reid, was born Sept. 4, 1859 at Charleston, Lee County, Iowa and departed this life on Aug. 8, 1929 aged 69 years, 11 months and 4 days. On June 30, 1880 the deceased was united in marriage to Minnie V. Heaton and to this union were born two sons. Brother Reid leaves to mourn his sudden departure, his devoted wife and two sons, Walter Albin Reid of Downs, Kan. and Claude Alvin Reid of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three brothers and two sisters as follows: Edward, Rufus and William Reid of Concordia, Kan. and Mrs. Herbert Hakes and Mrs. O.M. Bulla, both of Clyde, Kan. and five grandchildren, Donald, Audrey Bulla, Ardith and Shirley Reid of Downs, Kan. The Reids came to Portis about 1885 and remained ever since in and around Portis. On Dec. 16, 1916, Brother Reid, with his wife, was baptized and received into the First Brethren Church of Portis, Kan., by Rev. A.E. Whitted. Brother Reid has always taken a lively interest in the church of his choice until the time of his departure. The deceased was well known in this community as a farmer and stock raiser up until a few years ago when he retired from the farm and has since lived in Portis. Brother Reid took a lively interest in religious things, politics and world affairs up until the very day of his death. His sons both say to tell the people he was a good dad. He loved his sons as well as they loved him. Brother Reid lived an honest, upright life, was a good and thoughtful neighbor and loved his home above everything else. The funeral service was held on Sat. afternoon at two-thirty at the Brethren Church and was in charge of the pastor, Rev. S. Lowman, who was assisted by Rev. O.N. Wiles of the Portis Methodist Church. A large congregation attended the last rites. Burial was made at the Fairview Cemetary southwest of Portis. There were many beautiful flowers.391 | ||||||||||
