Chubbuck, (Mrs. Ralph) Rt. #3, Box 76, Concordia, KS 66901, has been a great help to us in our research on the Lafayette Wasson Reid family. She is a member of the Cloud County (Kansas) Genealogical Society. PROFESSION - FARMER AND HUCKSTER (SELLER OF GOODS) Lafayette W. Reid received land from his parents, James and Lavina in Madison County, Iowa on 1 August 1865...For the sum of $100.00...SEVENTY ONE ACRES AND FIFTY SEVEN ONE HUNDREDTHS OFF OF THE WEST SIDE OF THE SOUTH EAST QUARTER OF SECTION THIRTY TOWNSHIP SEVENTY SEVEN NORTH OF RANGE TWENTY NINE WEST, SITUATED IN MADISON COUNTY STATE OF IOWA. In the obituary of Rufus Carwin Reid, son of Lafayette and Amanda Reid, it states that Lafayette was a Huckster (a person who sells wares in the street like a peddler) over the old plank road to the Mississippi River which was the principal source of transportation in those early days. In the Lee County, Iowa Gazetteer, 1868, Lafayette Reid is listed as "Dry Goods and Groceries". Annette (Strange) Carroll has a copy of this in her possession. Lafayette Wasson Reid and his family traveled to Cloud County, Kansas in a covered wagon and settled "near Jamestown" about 1878. Lafayette's mother Lavina (Wasson) Reid is buried in the Saron Scandinavian Baptist Church cemetery near Jamestown, Kansas. She died 29 Jul 1883. Information from Jeff Reid, son of Rufus C. Reid and Grandson of Lafayette W. and Amanda Reid in a letter to Annette (Strange) Carroll states: "My Dad's parents (Lafayette and Amanda) left the ranch northwest of Concordia, Kan.(near Jamestown, Kan.), bought a home, a farm and a hotel at Concordia and one at Clyde, and my family moved to Clyde when I was 5 years old to run the Iowa Hotel for Grandad. That would be the year 1899. Their home was 3 miles west of Clyde, Kan. at Ames. Aunt Sadie and Uncle Mort Bulla lived on Grandad's farm just a mile from Ames. Don Reid, son of Rufus Carwin Reid and grandson of Lafayette and Amanda Reid told Annette (Strange) Carroll in August of 1991 that Lafayette had 3 hotels. He had 1 in Clyde, Kansas and 2 in Concordia, Kansas. In 1898 Lafayette Wasson Reid sent a letter to his daughter, Sadie and her husband, Mort Bulla who lived in Kansas City, Mo. Lafayette lived in Portis, Osbourne County, Kansas at that time. U.S. Census Summary: 1910..Amanda C. " " ...Charleston, Lee Co., Iowa 1860..Lafayette and Amanda..... " " " 1850..Lafayette W. Reid (age 12)..Montrose, Lee Co., Iowa Annette (Strange) Carroll has corresponded with Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Reid and has talked to Carrol and his father, Don on the telephone. Don Reid is the son of Rufus Carwin Reid. Annette has information on their family in her possession sent to her by them in 1989. Carrol Reid's wife Una Belle died 1 Oct., 1995. Carrol Reid's address is 5165 Palmer Dr., Kansas City, Missouri 64129. Annette (Strange) Carroll also has corresponded with Mrs. Trudy Fielding of San Bruno, California, the great-granddaughter of Ola (Reid) Hakes. She has met with Annette and helped her identify many family pictures and has sent additional information and copies of some of the postcards in Amanda Celeste (Newberry) Reid's postcard collection that is in her possession. During a trip to Clyde, Kansas in August of 1991, Annette (Strange) Carroll was shown the location of the Hotel that Lafayette and Amanda Reid had in Clyde. The building is now gone but was located on Washington St. near Railroad Ave. The Funeral Record of Lafayette Wasson Reid shows that the funeral was held on April 9, 1905, place of death, Ames, Kansas, the deceased was a farmer, he died of Leuchemia (sp.), services were held at home at 2:30 p.m., Rev. T.E. Moffat officiating. The price of the casket was $51.50, outside box, $3.50, Hearse, $5.00, Wagon Deliveries, $2.00. The total of the bill was $62.00 LAFAYETTE WASSON REID'S OBITUARY: Concordia Daily Kansan Monday, April 10, 1905 L.W. REID DEAD Aged Ames Citizen Passes Away At An Early Hour Saturday Morning Lafayette Wasson Ried, aged 66 years, 7 months and 13 days, died at his home in Ames, Kansas Saturday morning. He had been sick for several months and while his death is a sad blow to the family, it was not wholly unexpected as he had been failing rapidly of late. He was one of our most highly respected citizens. He had two sons, W. Reid and Rufus Reid, who live here. The funeral will occur at the home at Ames Sunday afternoon at 2:30, services to be conducted by Rev. T.C. Moffat of the Presbyterian Church. The interment will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetary. Clyde Daily Republican (It is interesting to note that the rest of Lafayette Reid's children, including Annette (Strange) Carroll's great grandfather, Charles Edward Reid are not mentioned in the above obituary.)391 | ||||||||||||||
