| See the following letter to Hugh Reid Miller Fort Madison July 19th 1851 Dear Sir We herewith send you our card for locating land warrants. Person wishing to locate in the West cannot do better than in Iowa Respectfully Edward Johnston & James M. Reid P.S. I am next to the youngest brother of Hugh T. [?] Reid, am practising law here with his old partner Mr. Johnston who is now candidate for County Judge, a new office created by the "New Code". My brother and family are all well--he lives at keokuk. Father is in excellent health I never saw him look better. I know very little about my relatives should be pleased to hear from my cousins South Your truly J.M. Reid second page advertisement LAND WARRANTS LOCATED ----------------------- The undersigned have made arrangements to locate, in BEST PORTIONS OF THE STATE OF IOWA, all Land Warrants that may be forwarded to their care, for that purpose. THE WARRANTS MUST BE TRANSMITTED UNDER COVER OF POST PAID LETTERS AND ADDRESSED TO EDWARD JOHNSTONE, March, A.D. 1851 AND J. M. REID FORT MADISON,IOWA James Monroe Reid served in Co. I, 15th Iowa Regiment in Civil War. Was wounded slightly in the neck at Shiloh. Brother to Col. Hugh T. Reid. Information from Annette Carroll: James Monroe Reid authored the book "SKETCHES AND ANECDOTES OF THE OLD SETTLERS AND NEWCOMERS, THE MORMAN BANDITS AND DANITE BAND", copywrite 1876, Keokuk, Iowa, R.B. Ogden, Publisher. Annette (Strange) Carroll has a copy of this book (photocopied). He was a Colonel in the Civil War. Along with his brother Hugh Thompson Reid he became a lawyer in Keokuk, Iowa, however they were not employed by the same firm. 1880 Census, Lee Co. Keokuk, ED 20, p.4 (2 Jun 1880) Reid, James M.
