Misc. Notes
Listed on p.118 of "The Pickens Family" by (Kate Pickens Day) as William Simmons (note KPD has parents confused).

Listed in 1/13/1844 agreement between the heirs of Robert Simmons--Note: Heirs of Robert Simmons entered into an agreement with Robert M. Simmons dated January 13, 1844, whereby Robert M. Simmons relinquished all right, title and interest in the personal property of the estate to the other heirs who signed the agreement, and the other heirs relinquished their right in the tract of land "whereon the deceased died bounded on the west by the Bogue Chitto, north by Jesse Day, East by R. M. Simmons, South by J. M. Simmons," provided R. M. Simmons was to be responsible to the absent heirs (Elizabeth Wills [Wells], Jane Rautsen [Raulston], John Simmons, Anna Williams. signed by W. W. Simmons, Rebeca Dias, Eleanor C. Day, William Day, James R. Williams, Robert M. Simmons. Legal Records of Washington Parish, Vol. I, p. 26, comp. by E. Russ Williams.

See also "Raulston Russell Genealogy", p. 208.

Note that the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule has an entry:
SIMMONS, Will --- Age 57, male, born S.C., died September of cause
unknown, farmer, ill 1 day.
I believe his family is listed with that of Margaret Simmons in the 1850 census of Washington County near those of Ellen Day, Robert Simmons and Rebecca Dias:
1850 Census La. Washington Parish p. 446B (October 28, 1850)
130 Margaret Simmons 30 F 200 La
Malissa McLean 17 F La.
Edward McLean 31 m Depty Sheriff La
Mary Meusils 23 f La.
Edward Meusils 10 M La.
David Meusils 8 M La.
Mary A Meusils 6 F La.
Mary Simmons 10 F. La
Albertus Simmons 8 M La
Robert P " 3 M La.
Edward McLean 61 M school teacher Ireland

The 1850 Census also has the following family group, near the Margaret Simmons group:
p. 446A dn 124 fn 124
J. H. Simmons 26 M merch 800 La
Rebecca Simmons 29 F La
W. I. Simmons 19 M Clerk La.
I currently (May 2003) believe that J. H., Rebecca and W. I. were children by William Simmons' first wife, that Margaret Simmons was his second wife, maiden name McLean, and that Mary, Albertus and Robert P. Simmons are William and Margaret's children. This is partially based on the 1840 census, which gave William's family as 1 male under 5, one 5 to 10(W.I), one 10 to 15(J. H.), one 20 to 30 and one 40 to 50 (william), one female under five , one 15 to 20(Rebecca), one 20 to 30(Margaret possibly) and one female 30 to 40. The ages don't exactly match up, but William clearly had a large family, Robert M. Simmons apparently did not and the two are the only Simmons in the 1840 Washington Co. Census.
