Journal of Miss. History vol. 6, p. 117, "W. A. Montgomery's Record of the Raymond Fencibles, edited by P. L. Rainwater. George J. Miller was wounded severely at Second Manassas; transferred to cavalry.

Educated at Military College of Tenn and Univ of Miss, from whence volunteered in the Co. A [Co. C] (Raymond Fencibles) of the Famous 12th Miss. Regiment. It was the first Co. leaving Hinds Co where he lived. This Regiment participated in every battle of the army of Northern Virginia from First Manassas or Bull Run to Appomattox. George Miller was wounded desparately at the second battle of Manassas, and was promoted to Capt. for distinguished gallantry. As courier for General Featherstone, returning from Major General Wilcox, he was struck by cannon ball on the upper and outer part of his thigh. He spent night unconscious pinned under Col. Merry Harris's horse which was also killed. He was rescued by Old Dennis, his faithful slave who went behind enemy lines to hunt for him. Dennis carried him on his shoulders through the lines to the field Hospital of the Confederate Army. George Miller recovered from his wound in time to take part in the Pennsylvania campaign, and upon the return of the Armyl to Virginia, he was sent home to raise a Company of calvary, as he could not stand walking. It was too late to raise the Company, and he remained attached to Forest Calvary for the remaining few months of the war.223
