Nehls, 56 Years Old, Succumbs to Injuries Lingered Twelve Hours Was Daughter of Late Senator Gordon and Prominent in Christian Science Church--Came Here From New Orleans Seven Years Ago ____ Mrs. Annie Gordon Nehls, 56 years old, a daughter of the late Senator James H. Gordon of Mississippi, died at her home, 970 Elizabeth Place, at 7 o'clock last night as a result of burns received yesterday morning while attempting to light a gas heater. Mrs. Nehls was for years a prominent figure in Christian Science circles and for about three years had been a practitioner in the Memphis church. She came to Memphis seven years ago from New Orleans. Shortly after rising yesterday morning Mrs. Nehls went to the bath room of her home and made efforts to light a small gas heater. Her first attempt was unsuccessful and when she struck a second match the gas, which had been escaping meanwhile, ignited. The flame shot over her body, setting fire to a light kimona which she wore. Negro Cook Uses Blanket. Screaming for help, she ran out into the hall, where a negro cook, who was the only person in the house with her at the time, tried to extinguish the flames with a woolen blanket. Failing in this, the cook ran outside to call assistance. When neighbors reached Mrs. Nehls whe was lying in the hallway still in flames. Medical aid was hastily summoned, but physicians despaired of her life after an examination was made. Mrs. Nehls was burned from her neck to her feet. The entire surface skin was taken off from her ears and chin to the soles of her feet. Her face and hair were unblemished. Although unconscious for a few moments after being discovered, Mrs. Nehls was conscious until shortly before she died. Opiates were administered by attending physicians to ease the pain and according to friends who were at the beside during the day, she rested well. Shortly before 77 [sic] o'clock a trained nurse in attendance noticed a lessening in her pulse which presaged her death only a short while. Could not find son. Mrs. Nehls is survived by two sons, Gordon T. Barrow of Millington, Tenn., and John T. Barrow of Memphis. The former was at the bedside of his mother during the afternoon, having arrived in Memphis from his home after telegrams had summoned him early in the afternoon. Her second son, who is a traveling man, left here only Saturday. Efforts were made to notify him, but were unsuccessful. It is said by friends of the family he will arrive today. Mrs. Nehls was twice married. Both husbands are dead. She lost a daughter, Miss Virginia Barrow, only two years ago. She was prominent in the Christian Science Church at New Orleans before she came here during the latter part of 1907. She moved to New Orleans some years previous from North Mississippi. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the residence. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Handwritten notes. "Her first husband was J. T. Barrow of Louisville, Ky." | ||||||||||||||
