Margaret Hughes to Ebenezer Miller 18 Apr 1826:"My other son lives in Natchez. He was a clerk in Colonel Schuyler's store last year and never left Natchez during the Yellow fever and Col. S. and his other clerk both died with the yellow fever and this year Jefferson bought out his goods and is now on his own footing. "

Hibernia Hughes to Mrs. Sarah Miller 27 Jan 1833: "tell Cousin Andrew Brother Jeff is a hot as red pepper, he is talking of shouldering his musket and putting out to Carolina if it should be necessary notwithstanding he is the greatest Jackson Man you ever saw; he lost five thousand dollars on the presidential election and gave ten thousand; and then jump'd up on a cannon and put the match to it himself. Oh! He is such a wild boy, I have not seen him since I came home, and it's now been two years since I saw him."

Hibernia Hughes to Susan Miller 3 Jun 1834: "I have not heard from Brother Jeff for some time. He has quit the Bank, I believe, and has bought him a plantation in the Nation. "

A J. J. Hughes listed in 1850 Yazoo County Census as Planter with $55,000 in value of real estate (altho age appears as 40 in the census.

Zilpha McGinty to Susan Miller 26 March 1860:"Ella has been traveling about though. She went to Dr. Franklin's in December & staid till first of January & has just now got home from a visit to Jefferson in New Orleans."
