" 122 Hibernia Hughes to Ebenezer Miller 16 June 1835:"Our family is quite small now to what it was when you were here. The boys have both left-Philip and Edwin. Philip is living with his Uncle Phil and is riding as deputy for him. Edwin is in Rodney keeping store for a Mr. Campbel, and Mary Ann has left, and is living with her son-in-law Thomas Grafton on Second Creek, about twenty miles from here, and there were no persons but Mother, Peggy, and myself at home until Mr. Clifton came up about two months since and brought his two oldest children and left them to go to school. They are a great deal of company for us. " Zilpah Miller to Susan Miller, 8 Nov 1838:"Cousin Mary Ann was hear last winter on way to see Cousin Alzada. She said that she lived with Henreta." Zilpah McGinty to Susan Miller, 29 Nov 1839:"Ritty has a fine son three weeks old. She has not named him yet. Her and Mary Ann send their love to you and say they would be more than glad to see you." 1840 Jefferson Co. Census lists a Mrs. M. Erwin with 29 slaves and the following household: 1 Male 10-15 1 Male 20-30 1 Female less than 5 1 Female 10-15 1 Female 20-30 1 Female 30-40 (Mary Ann Erwin was actually 47) The female 10-15 is presumably Alzade and the 20-30 presumably Henrietta, based on the February 1835 letter from Hibernia Hughes to Sarah Miller. The 20-30 year old male would be Dr. Thomas Grafton, Henrietta Erwin's husband. The female less than five would be A[lzade] Grafton, their daughter Zilpha McGinty to Susan Miller, letter dated July 17, 1844 (original in possession of Charles Miller, Leesburg, Florida: "I presume it is old Mr. Tommy Grafton that wish to enquire about. He left this county soon after you was here and moved to Madison County, and I expect is as near you as he is here now." Zilpah McGinty to Susan Miller, 7 May 1848: " Dear cousin you inquire about Mary Ann. You know she is not living or at least I wrote to Cousin Margaret about it but perhaps she did not get the letter. Yes, Mary Ann died the first day of last October after an illness of five weeks. She had Typhus fever. She was sensible till near the last, and died the belief of a happy immortality. She has been a member of the Methodist Church three years. " | ||||||||||
