| See letter from to Susan Miller from Samuel Reid dated January 4, 1855 (copy sent to me by Sandra Lake Lassen)--mentions wife Betsy Ann nursing sick slaves during typhoid fever epidemic. "We had a wonderful revival the like never was seen at Longcain [Long Cane], many deeply affected... Lemuel family and Welloons have had good health last fall. Mrs. Isa Miller is sick at this time. In 1830 Abbeville Dist. Census, p. 59 , Samuel Reid family listed as male 40-50, one female 30-40, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 5-10, 6 male slave and 6 female slaves, with Robert Wilson and Hugh Kirkwood families next listed. In 1850 Abbeville Co. census, Samuel is listed as 62, Elizabeth A. Reid as 54, Margaret E. Reid as 25, and Alexander M. Courthouse Records-DOC. #89 The 1860 Diary Of Lemuel Reid, An Abbeville District, South Carolina Planter (with his genealogy and descendants) by Wayne Alexander Reid, 1994. (In the possession of Annette (Strange) Carroll). Samuel Reid was a Ruling Elder of the Upper Long Cane Presb.. Church, 1850-1857. Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Reid had 6 children: Mary marr. John R. Wilson Jane marr. Col. Freeman Lemuel marr. Sophia Weston White James Caldwell marr. Fanny Freeman (moved to Mississippi prior to the Civil War, but is buried at Long Cane Cem. He possibly fled the Union invasion of Mississippi and died while in South Carolina). Margaret Elizabeth marr. _______ Keaton Alexander Mack Samuel's son Lemuel Reid was a Sargent in the Civil War, Co. H, 5th. S.C. Reserves. Enlisted at Abbeville, Nov. 17, 1862, Age 44. On last roll Feb. 11, 1863. He was a soldier in the Confederate army. (This information was obtained from the South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History, 1430 Senate Street, Columbia, S.C. in 1972.) William J. (Bill) and Wayne A., and Buddy Reid are brothers who are descendants of Samuel Reid and Elizabeth Ann (Wilson) through their son, Lemuel, his son, Alexander Mack and Alexander Mack's son, William J. Reid. William J.(Bill) Reid Jr. and wife, Nancy live at 3240 Six Mile Rd., Central, South Carolina, 2963l (near Clemson, South Carolina) Wayne A. Reid and Lou live at 1208 E. River Dr., #201, Melbourne, Florida, 32901. Wayne and Bill's father, William J. Reid still lived in Abbeville, South Carolina and was attending Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church when he died. Wayne and Bill's brother, Oscar (Buddy) and wife Marilyn (Myrt) currently live in Abbeville, South Carolina. In 1994 Wayne Reid sent me a copy of the book he has written on the Reid family titled: The 1860 Diary of Lemuel Reid, An Abbeville District, South Carolina Planter, (with his genealogy and descendants), by Wayne Alexander Reid. In October, 1995, Wayne and Bill took myself and my husband, Herbert (Jerry) on a tour of the Abbeville, South Carolina area. (see notes under Hugh Reid) It is so nice to be able to have contact with these cousins. It makes the past seem present! (Current info. on the Reid family was sent to Bill and Wayne Reid in November, 1995 and again to Wayne in April 1999). | ||||||||||||
