An 22 Sep 1796 letter from Gen. Andrew Pickens to James Robertson, the founder of Nashville, thanks Robertson "for your friendly attention" to "my nephew Ebenezer Miller" "who went by way of your house this summer, to and from the Natches on the Mississippi..." The letter can be found in "Correspondence of Robertson," American Historical Magazine, vol. IV, No. 4 (Oct. 1899) pp. 336-337. I have copy of this letter, which is in the Tennessee Archives.

Ebenezer Miller took the oath of office as a Justice of the Peace for the County of Abbeville on January 26, 1799. A copy of the certification signed by Andrew Hamilton is in my files.The original is in the files of Charles Miller, Leesburg, FL.

In the 1800 Census for Abbeville Co., Ebenezer's household consisted of two males 16-26 (probably Ebenezer and Joseph, with John Henry possibly in school) and one female over 45, who was probably their mother, Jean Pickens Miller. The household owned 6 slaves.

Archives: Pursuant to warrant ... dated 24 Mar 1806, 19 acres on a branch of Clarks (crossed out) Parks Creek water of Little river bounded by a line running North by lands surveyed to Robt. Miller & S. W. by lands laid out for him also also N. E. by land laid for Jospeh Elles & James Elles...surveyed 25 mar 1806. Signed Hugh Morrah D. S.

In the 1810 census for Abbeville Co., Ebenezer's household consisted of two males under 10 (Andrew 9, Erskine just born), one male 16-26 (?), one male 26-45 (Ebenezer, 43), two females under 10 (Jane 5, Susan 2), one female 10-16 (?), and one female 26-45 (Margery, 32). Jane Pickens Miller was not listed in the census. The household owned 5 slaves.

State Loose Plate #100, S. C. Archives--Ebenezar Miller, Abbeville District. Pursuant to a warrant dated the 22nd day of Deccember instant I have admeasured and laid out to Ebenezar Miller a tract of land containing five hundred & fifty acres, situate in the district of as on Parkses Creek of Little River having such shape marks and boundaries as the above plat represented. Surveyed the 23 December 1818 Signed Wm. Lesly D.S.


In the 1820 census of Abbeville Co., Ebenezer's household was 3 males under 10 (Hugh 8, Robert 6, Langdon 1), 2 males 10-16 (Erskine 10 and probably Andrew, 19), 1 male over 45 (Ebenezer, 53), 1 female under 10 (Margaret Ann, 3), 2 females 10-16 (Jane 15, Susan 12), one female 26-45 (Margary, 42) and one female over 45 (probably Ebenezer's sister Jane Miller). The household had four male slaves (2 under 14, 2 14-26) and 3 female slaves (2 under 14, one 26-45).

In the 1830 census of Abbeville Co., Ebenezer's household had two males 5-10 ( Samuel 7, Langdon 10), one male 10-15 (Robert, 15), 2 males 15-20 (Hugh R. 18, Erskine 20) 1 male 60-70 (Ebenezer 62/3), one female 10-15 (Margaret 12), one female 15-20(probably Susan 22), one female 20-25 (Jane 25) one female 50-60 (Margary 51/2). Total slaves seven, 3 males (one 10-24, two 24-36) and four females (one under 10, two 10-24, one 24-36).

In 1838, Ebenezer Miller sold his plantation in Abbeville County near Due West and moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi, where he was a pioneer settler in the Bankhead Community.

Diary of Hugh Reid Miller for 1856 states in entry for Thursday October 23, 1856: "Remains of Ebenezer Miller my father removed from Harmony Church and deposited in graveyard at Pontotoc" N.B. Death date on gravestone is 5 Oct. 1848.

The last will and testament of Ebenezer Miller of Pontotoc County, Mississippi.
Be it known that I Ebenezer Miller of said county and State, being of sound mind, do make, ordain and appoint, this to be my last will and testament.
Item lst: I desire that my funeral expenses and all my just debts shall be paid, and my executors are hereby empowered to sell such portion of my personal property as may be necessary for that purpose.
Item 2nd: I desire that all my personal property shall be kept together on the place where I now reside, for and during the natural life of my wife Margery Miller, to be used and worked for the benefit and support of my said wife, and of such of my children as may continue to reside
with her.
Item 3rd: I give and bequeath to my daughter Susan my negro woman named Sarah and her child named Tom.
Item 4th: I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret Ann, my negro womannamed Betty and her youngest child named William.
Item 5th: I give and bequeath to my son Robert Alexander my negro mannamed Stepney and his two children, one named Esther, and the other named Israil, and also that parcel of land known and designated as the South East quarter of Section Thirty Six, in Township Nine, of Range Three
East, according to the survey of the Chickasaw Cession, lying and being in the county of Pontotoc; and it is to be understood that this bequest is in full payment for all services which my said son Robert A. has heretofore rendered in attending to my business.
Item 6th: It is further my will and desire that if either of my children Susan, Margaret Ann, or Robert Alexander, shall desire to live separate and apart from their mother, instead of residing with her during her lifetime, such child shall be at liberty to take with them for their own
separate use, the negroes bequeathed t them respectively above.
Item 7th: It is my will that in the event of the death of either of mychildren provided for in this my will, without issue living at their death, the share or portion of such child, shall belong and be distributed to my surviving children and their heirs of such as may have died leaving issue.
Item 8th: It is my will that after the death of my wife, all the rest and residue of my property, both real and personal, and the increase thereof, shall be equally distributed amongst all my children, share and share alike, with this exception that the share and portion of said property which shall be allotted in the distribution to my daughter Jane Pickens Norwood shall remain in the possession of my sons Andrew Miller and Hugh R. Miller, and shall be held by them in trust, for the benefit of my said daughter Jane Pickens, and of her children, and shall be paid by said trustees to her, or in case of her death, to her children when they become of age respectively, in such sums and at such times as in their opinion may be proper.
Item 9th: I do ordain, constitute and appoint my sons, Andrew Miller and Hugh R. Miller my executors, to execute this my last will and testament.
In testimony that the forgoing three pages contain my last will and testament, I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this 31st day of August A.D. 1847.
