| Misc. Notes |
James Gordon wrote the following in a "Biographical Memoranda" copied by Forrest Tutor:
"Robert Gordon was the younger son of a distinguished Scotish family. He emigrated to Mississippi when it was inhabited by the Chickasaw Indians. His wife was born in Amelia Co. Virginia. When quite young she came to Mississippi with her parents, was educated at Decatur Ala. Her ancestors were conspicuous in the revolutionary war and her father was in the war of 1812. They were descendants of Lord Walton of England.
From Forrest Tudor website:
Mary Elizabeth's obituary stated "she lived on the borders of the Chickasaw Nation in her youth and had no formal education. She was later sent to school in middle Tenn. when she was a young woman. She was no ordinary woman but was the priceless ornament of the society in which she lived. She was an elegant person with the highest and best traits of character, both in head and heart. She was an affectionate daughter, a devoted wife and a fun mother, a kind mistress, a faithful friend and a benefactress to the poor and a genuine follower of the meek and Holy Savior. In the last year of her life she experienced an ordeal of affliction and trial that sounded her Christian faith to the bottom. She took sick in September 1867 and never left her bed after June 1868 and died Feb. 21, 1869. 14 |
