Computer Geeks

Things are going well around here, and I intend to enjoy it while it lasts. As an example of what side of the bed we've all been getting up on, James said the other morning, "Are we going to stay home today and read books and have fun? Let's do it then! Let's rock and ball!" Later that day he picked up a plastic trumpet, started marching, and said, "Let's have a capade!" Today he told me, "I love those shoes you are wearing!"

John has continued his interest in birds, and our bird book is now a frequent visitor to his special pillow on his bed where every night he deposits his current favorite things. His Gamecock baseball bat, his firetruck with the broken windshield, and the bird book. The water flute and cowboy wallet are suddenly passe'. He especially likes to look up the cardinal in the book. The red boy cardinal and the brown "gay-ul" (girl) cardinal.

Only Georgie is really acting up right now, and it's nothing evil, just a tad sneaky and argumentative. Today at lunch he knew (it's always the rule) he had to eat most of his quesadilla to eat his cookie. My mom and I were talking and then I turned and George was eating his cookie plain as day without having had one bite of quesadilla. When I said, "George, you have to eat your quesadilla first!" he was neither upset or surprised. He'd eaten most of the cookie already and I'm guessing in his mind he figured, oh well, worked for a while at least--nothing ventured, nothing gained. The other day, James' tennis racquet's grip was peeling off, so he grabbed George's yellow one to play with. George's reason for not sharing with James: "You can't borrow mine--it's too yellow!" When George was whining because he wanted juice instead of water, I told him he could have some juice if he drank his cup of water first. He thought two seconds and then said, "I need it in a little cup." Mr. Smarty Pants. He continues to have NO interest in using the potty. Well, he does say he wants to try it and then when you get to the potty--today while we were out to lunch and people were wating behind us--he says, "I DON"T want to go." The peer pressure of John and James wearing underpants does nothing. Those two are hardly threats to his own coolness. Maybe if I told him animals wear undies he might be more interested. When I tucked him in for nap earlier, he was engaged in a lively conversation between a zebra and a yak.

The weather being warmer makes my job infinitely easier. Going outside is pleasant, easy, and cheap entertainment. George can spend an hour or so perching his plastic animals on branches in the boxwoods, John can "cut down trees," and James can fight forest fires. Momoe can sit in the rocking chair and read the paper. Can this be real? Only a week ago it was a complete fantasy. Yesterday my tennis match was on courts right next to a driving range. There were all these men on the driving range who were on a golf package trip from Canada where they travel around the area playing golf and escaping the cold. I can understand that. Everything is better in the warm sun! The bulbs the boys and I planted after Christmas are peeking up and if they bloom before the boys yank them out or "find them!" to death I will enjoy them. My doubles partner and I actually won our match yesterday! Against two old ladies with coughs, runny noses, and an inability to remember the score--but I have been beaten by these wily types before and so I am not to proud to celebrate a little!

The warm weather does bring up the sticky topic of bathing suits, and I am not excited. I have been eating and drinking my stress away throughout the winter months, and already there are jeans I am now avoiding and shirts I swear must have shrunk in the wash. Even my chin and neck seems fleshier. Today I ordered some exercise DVD's with a gift certificate I got for my birthday. No more excuses about no time/money for the gym when I have Power Yoga, Shrinking Your Female Fat Zones, and Walk Away the Pounds. Thank goodness there is no mirror in the TV room.

Gotta run--I hear George getting up from his nap. Will's parents are picking them up in a little while and taking them out for an early supper. Let's hope they're still on the right side of the bed!
