Howard Horowitz's Viewpoint on HOA Theft

September 7, 2008

Now that we have all read the story of HOA theft on the web, there are questions that need answers here in Baywinds.

There can be no doubt that based upon what we all saw, our former Treasurer was not quite competent to perform her job. We all should recall that when the budget showed an item of $250,000.00 for salaries for our HOA, our Treasurer could not tell us how many employees we had.

It is that kind of a non-answer that should have raised more questions. Too bad that it didn't. No one is accusing anyone of wrongdoing but take a breath and think about all the avenues such incompetence opens.

Our former President pushed for the purchase of the clubhouse. He sought no professional help in this endeavor. He pushed and used scare tactics, threats, etc. to force the purchase. We bought the clubhouse which was valued by Palm Beach County at $1.5 million, for $5.9 million. We bought it in AS IS CONDITION, barely meeting minimum standards of construction by the County.

Whatever engineering report we got is missing, as is the warranty on our new roof.

We all know that our former President was very adept at snowjobs and glib talk. He was also good at ordering pails to be put out to catch leaks from our damaged roof, but not quite smart enough to have the roof covered to try and stop the leaks.

If anyone is really concerned, ask about all your money that was wasted on so-called legal fees during the last administration. No one is suggesting misappropriation of funds. However with all these questions, with all these errors, with all this mismanagement, isn't it time to invest in a FORENSIC ACCOUNTANT to take a good hard look at what we have been spending, and how we have been spending our hard earned money?
