9/11: Five Years Later and the U.S. is Still in Distress
A few days ago I received an email from a friend.
It was one of those,
let's-do-something-totally-symbolic-that-will-make-us-feel-good-but-have-absolutely-no-impact,
messages that people like to send around during holidays and other
not-so-festive occasions like the five year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on
New York and Washington D.C. This message urged everyone, on 9/11/2006, to make
a statement. A perfectly safe, non-threatening statement that will let your
family, friends, and neighbors stay blissfully in their Faux News bubble,
oblivious to the fact that the U.S. democracy is being highjacked just like
those airliners on 9/11/2001. Here's the forwarded text of the message along
with the little animated GIF flag that accompanied it:
On Monday, September 11th, 2006, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States.
In the days, weeks and months following 9/11 our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned our losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. It shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us again. Our American flag represents the fabric of our country and together we can prevail.
If the American flag represents
"the fabric of our country," then it surely must be one hole-filled rag by now,
since the neocons currently in control of our government are tearing this
country's fabric asunder. Below is my re-write, detailing what I believe is a
much more appropriate statement for the five year anniversary of
9/11:On Monday, September 11th, 2006, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States, but it should be displayed upside down, which is the "American in distress" configuration. In this case, however, it is the entire country that is in distress. In the days, weeks and months following 9/11 our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned our losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, in the months following 9/11, the Bush Administration not only squandered the goodwill and solidarity of the American people, but of the entire world. By prosecuting a war based on lies against a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, condoning torture and abuse, consolidating more and more power under the President, attempting to place the President above the law, undermining the governmental checks and balances designed by the Founding Fathers to protect our freedoms, and all the while eroding the civil liberties of American citizens and ignoring constitutional laws mandated by the First and Fourth Amendments, the flags that were once proudly displayed have all but disappeared. It shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us again, but an attack is exactly what is happening; an attack on the U.S. Constitution and our democracy. Even in distress, our American flag represents the fabric of our country, and we should use it as a reminder of the principles on which this country was founded and which made it the greatest nation on earth. Together we can prevail against the anti-Constitutional forces currently in control of the U.S. government and once again make the U.S. the beacon of freedom and human rights for the world.
The Emperor and his entire
administration have no clothes.
