LDS-PHIL
LDS-PHIL is an email discussion group designed for the discussion of philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, and other issues of religion and philosophy from within the context of the Mormon religion. The Mormon religion has a unique theological framework (e.g. the belief that God the Father is embodied), and this framework has not received much philosophical attention from professional philosophers. Thus, many of us who pursue philosophical research have looked for a forum in which we could apply our philosophical tools to analyze and defend our religious beliefs.
LDS-PHIL is not a forum for the examination of all the possible defeaters of Mormon religious beliefs. There are already other forums which satisfy this role. It is expected that respect for Mormon beliefs will be upheld, and that discussion will proceed within that context. However, it is not expected that a legitimate philosophical issue which arises for Mormon theology will be avoided merely because it requires the interlocutors to examine the possibility that some other than the perceived orthodoxy might be correct. It is the conviction of the listowner that a frank discussion in the atmosphere of tolerance is more likely to lead to enlightenment on the seminal truths in Mormon theology. Nonetheless, direct attacks on Church leaders and policies will not be tolerated as part of this forum.
