Dakota: A Spiritual Geography by Kathleen Norris
finished 5/16 ......... contemp.
non-fiction/memoir ....... rating 7
This is an odd book. My sister Beth sent it to
my mom for a birthday gift a few years ago, but my mom never got around to
reading it. So I picked it up. We're from North Dakota so I was drawn to it
anyway. It wasn't quite what I expected but it was pretty good. I was
reminded of a combination of Willa Cather (Death Comes to the Archbishop) and
Annie Dillard (Pilgrim at Tinker Creek).
Norris, from the New York City art
community and her poet husband decide to take over the home of Norris'
grandmother in Lemmon, South Dakota. They planned to stay a few years which
turned into twenty-plus. The book is supposed to be a spiritual memoir based
on the geography. What I found was some negativity about the residents of small
towns interspersed with weather reports. Meanwhile, to make life tolerable,
Norris finds a Catholic monastery of Benedictine monks where she visits
frequently and whose residents she quotes.
