The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
finished 5/26 .......... contemp non-fiction
(nutrition) ......... rating 6
THis is very close to a mixed review. There
are parts of this book that are truly eye-opening and thought provoking and that
make grocery shopping quite difficult. "How did that ______ get to the market?
Do you really want to think about it? There was too much info about corn and
the chicken and organic chapters seemed pretty anti-capitalism more than an
appeal for good nutrition. Most of the book was dead on serious but when he
got to the sections leading up to his home-gathered, hunted and prepared meal it
turned into a farce.
Basically, I
agree with the premise that we would be better off in most ways if we bought
local - but what about fruit for folks in North Dakota? And beyond that,
Pollan just wants readers to be aware of the costs of their food to their
pocketbook, the environment and to our ethics, I think.
