Slow Man by J.M. Coetzee

An amusing story of Paul Rayment, an older man, who, while on his bicycle is hit by a car with the result that he loses a leg. He gets a nurse, hates her and then gets another nurse, Marijana, with whom he falls in love. He tries to "adopt" her son and her family but Marijana's husband does not approve at all and the family has other troubles. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Costello, an author-protagonist from Coetzee's prior work of the same name (Elizabeth Costello) turns up to give Paul advice. The questions revolve around real and fake and love and not-love.
